LAND POSSESSIONS

BRITAIN'S "UNFAIR SHARE" DR MANNIX ON THE WAR The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr Mannix), in a recent address, said that if the war between Italy and Abyssinia extended he hoped Australia would remain out of it. The world, lie declared, had gone back to the savagery of 191-1. Many people said that the Pope should vstop the war, Archbishop Mannix proceeded. How could he do it? The Pope knew his own power and his limitations. It was not the Pope's business without an invitation from the contending parties to pronounce a verdict upon the dispute. When the question of setting up the League of Nations was discussed, the Pope was not invited to take his place in the tribunal. Nothing had given him greater pleasure than the knowledge that the Pope had had nothing to do with the Treaty of Versailles. There would never be peace in the world until a more equitable arrangement replaced the Treaty of Versailles. Dr Mannix said that a few nations had a great deal more than their fair share of the world. Certainly France and England, whose populations were falling, had more territory than they were entitled to. Why should any couutrp hold an undue part of the world? Italy, Germany, and Japan had too Utile territory for their expanding populations. They could see what was happening with Italy. He was not defending Italy. In 1914 he had been against a trade war, and he was against a trade war now —whether the aggressor was Italy, England, France, or any other nation. What had happened with Italy would happen before long with Germany.
