WOMEN’S GOLF

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS OF THIRD ROUND (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 21. The New Zealand Women’s golf championship was continued at Heretaunga to-dny, the third round being played in perfect weather. The match between Mrs Walker and Mrs Fullerton Smith was followed by a considerable gallery. The play proved most interesting, chiefly owing to the missing of a number of short putts bj Mrs Walker. Mrs Fullerton Smith played a fine long game and kept the game alive until the end. At the first Mrs Walker’s second lay to the right of a bunker, completely duffed. Mrs Fullerton Smith, who reached the green in two, was down in four. The second was halved, Mrs Walker laying her opponent an impossible stymie. At the next Mrs Walker’s tee shot lay barely six inches from the hole. She sank her putt for two. Mrs Fullerton Smith was bunkered. At the fourth Mrs Walker was on the green in two, but missed putts, and the hole was halved in fours. At the fifth Mrs Walker’s tee shot was well short, but a beautiful chip took her to within a foot of the pin. She missed an easy putt, taking four and giving Mrs Fullerton Smith, who reached the green with her tee shot, the hole. Although she landed in the rough from the tee, Mrs Fullerton Smith was on with her second. Mrs Walker was two feet from the pin with her third and took the hole in four to five. The seventh was halved in fives. Mrs Walker took the eighth in five to six, Mrs Fullerton Smith striking a bunker with her third. Mrs Fullerton Smith went past at the next and missed a difficult putt, and Mrs Walker took the hole in three to four, being two up at the turn. Mrs Fullerton Smith struck a bunker again at the tenth, Mrs Walker taking the hole in four to five, the next four being halved. At the fifteenth Mrs Walker was well on the green, but Mrs Fullerton Smith sent hers to the left. She failed to sink a 20-foot putt to halve the hole and save the match. Mrs Walker sank her putt for three, winning the match 4 and 3. Miss Anderson was brilliant to win from Miss Horwell 4 and' 3. Starting with a “ birdie ” three at the first, where she laid her iron shot dead, she had a wonderful string of figures until the seventh, where she slipped a putt and recorded six. Miss Anderson was five up at the turn. She took the eleventh after careful putting. The fifteenth was conceded to Miss Anderson, Miss Horwell overshooting the green. Mrs Greenlees played the best round to date when she boat Miss Guy 5 and 4. Miss Guy struck several patches of trouble, recording a 0 at the fourth.

Miss 0. Kay scored a clear-cut win, G and 5, over Miss 0. Smith, taking the lead at an early stage of the match. The early stages of the game between Misses Helean and James were interesting, the first win going to Miss Helean at the fourth in 4, Miss James taking the next, also in 4. Miss Helean won the seventh and eighth, but lost the ninth, Miss James turning 1 down. Miss White Parsons held Miss Barton fairly well in the first half, being 1 down at the turn. Miss Barton won the eleventh. Miss White Parsons conceded the fourteenth, and Miss Barton won the fifteenth, winning 4 and 3. Results: — Miss Wade beat Mrs M'Fayden, 8 and 6. Mrs Greenlees beat Miss M. Guy, 5 and 4. Miss Anderson beat Miss Horwell, 4 and 3. Miss Helean beat Miss James. 4 and 3. Mrs Walker beat Mrs Fullerton Smith, 4 and 3.
