In Growing Request Mr C. Gieseler will probably act as starter at the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings. Relations Rebel Chief is a half-brother to Gold Cross. Their dam, Yerintia, is a halfsister to Rapier. Astraea The Pink Coat filly Astraea, showed pace in her race at_ Timaru and should benefit by the experience. Fair Weather Fair Weather looked big in condition when produced at Timaru, and the race will sharpen him up a good deal. In Charge R. Beale has taken Black Duke and Guarantee on to Wellington. D. P. Wilson will go up on Thursday next. Miracle Miracle developed soreness last week and in consequence dropped out of his engagement at Timaru. Good Fields The acceptances for the first day of the Wellington spring meeting total 148, or 33 more than last year. The Smuggler A southern report states that The Smuggler is being ridden at exercise and will shortly go into training. Mount Val Mount Val will be racing at Trentham with 101 b less than he carried at Timaru. The drop will help his chance. Increased Stakes The stakes for the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting have been increased by lOosovs, bringing the total up to 129550 vs At Geraldine
There is a probability that a muchneeded improvement will be made on the Geraldine course at the six and sevenfurlong starting posts. A Hot Pace
Top Coat shaped well for about five furlongs at Timaru, but then faded. Dollar Prince set a hot pace and this helped to stop some of the opposition.
A Slow Stayer Tout le Monde was travelling on at the finish of the Teschemaker Handicap and shaped as if he will be better suited when racing over a longer journey.
A Shaking H. Turner received a severe shaking when Trishna fell with him at Timaru, but has since made good progress towards recovery.
Kinnoull Kinnoull was worked after the last race at Timaru on Saturday and appears to be in excellent order, and training on.
Penalties Black Duke has been raised 41b in the Glen Hurdles to be run at Trentham, Guarantee goes up 21b in the Wainui Handicap, but has escaped an increase in the Shorts Handicap. Upset Form
The heavy rain which set in towards the conclusion of the card at Timaru was apparently responsible for some horses not racing up to expectations based on their work on a dry track.
A Cup Mount J. W. Lowe was so impressed with the riding ability of the New Plymouth apprentice R. W. Savage at the recent Auckland meeting that he engaged him for Sunee in the New Zealand Cup next month.
Gay Circle Mr G. J. Barton's colt Gay Circle put up a good performance at Caulfied by winning over eight furlongs and a-half in Imin 45>lsec. He appears to be on the improve and apparently staying on well. Arabian Knight Arabian Knight, the "winner of the Gwyn Nursery run at Caulfield, was got by Eastern Monarch from Starry Night, by Skyrocket, a son of Sunstar and Maid of the Mist, a daughter of Sceptre. Concert Pitch
Concert* Pitch was a paddock tip for his race at Timaru. He fell but was perhaps a bit far away from the leaders to hold a winning chance. Concert Pitch has grown into a nice three-year-old that looks like a galloper.
Olive Spiith Olive Smith was making her fkst appearance on a racecourse when in the field for the Otaio Hurdles. She jumped well over the first three hurdles, but then commenced to drift. She should prove useful over hurdles "with more experience.
Slasher Slasher attracted attention by the way he was finishing on in the Tycho Hack Handicap. He is a big colt by Rapier from Brambletye by Treadmill. Slasher should be found improving and probably winning over a distance. Palfresco
The Caulfield Cup winner Palfresco is a three-year-old colt got by Son of Mine from Little Millie by Bronzino — Posadena by Positano —Notre Dame by Malvolio —My Lady by Trenton—Pardon by Yattendon.
In the Places Hot Shot, who ran second to Palfresco in the Caulfield Cup, is a six-yeai’-old gelding by Pantheon —Rosewyu by Rossendale. The third horse. Marabou, is a four-year-old colt by Marconigram—Vivandiere, an imported mare by Bucks Hussar —Spondee by Phalaris. A Record
The Caulfield track appears to have become very fast as Palfresco won the Caulfield Cup in 2min 27 3-ssec. The previous best in the race was the 2min 28Jsec put up by Gaine Carrington, who carried 8.13, or 261 b more than Palfresco. Compris holds the New Zealand record of 2min 29sec. Guarantee
Paper Money’s stock are far more noted for speed than stamina and their brilliancy lias placed him well up in the list of winning sires. Guarantee scored a popular win in Mr J. M. Samson’s colours at Timaru and the pleasing part of the performance was the manner in which the handsome son of Paper
Money was staying on at the finish of a mile and a-quarter. The opposition could not be considered particularly strong at the weights and one that might have been more formidable in Golden King spoilt bis chance by sprawling when making the turn out of the straight. Guarantee is out of a Bcniform mare and daughters of the half brother to Martian have produced such stayers as Count Cavour, Tauramai, Bonnetter and Ark Royal. Boniform got good stayers in The Toff, Scion and Bon Ton. One reason why Guarantee may stay a distance is due to the' fact that he is inbred to the Sunshine taproot, and this is one of the staying lines in the Stud Book. Guarantee belongs to the Sharkie taproot, to which Advance, Rosefeldt and Tortulla trace their origin, and perhaps the son of Paper Money and Entre Nous may stay further than most of his get. Guarantee is a quiet goer in a race, and this is in his favour, and so also is the fact that he has always been noted as a strong finisher. Super ex Superex finished on well under pressure at Timaru, and the Night Raid colt gives indications of adding strength to the list of stayers in training. Superex is a lusty colt, and is gradually improving with racing.
