MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held yesterday at Palmerston, and was attended by Crs G. Ross (in the chair), O’Connell, Matheson, Sheat, Purvis, Ireland, D. Ross, Ritchie, and Sutherland. Reference was made to the illness of Mr C. R. Smith, of Bushey, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy, FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £289 15s lOd were passed for payment. TRAFFIC REPORT. The traffic inspector (Mr P. Laughton) reported having carried out inspections of brakes and lights.—Received. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The county inspector (Mr A. A. M'William) reported as follows: — Blue Mountain Riding.—General surface work has been done on the various roads and maintenance gravel placed on Craig’s, Cooks, and Switchback roads. A new culvert was put in on the Switchback road. Water-table cleaning was commenced on Janet’s Peak road, but was discontinued owing to the dry weather. Meadowbank Riding.—General surface work was done, and attention was given to gravel, water tables, and culverts. The main highway was scarified and graded from Palmerston to Bowker’s, and maintenance gravel was put on the worst parts of the road. No further progress has been made with the rocky corner at Bowker’s, but the road has been improved with the work already done. Buthey Riding.—Water tables have received attention and maintenance gravel put on where required. The main highways were graded and maintenance metal put on. Goodwood Riding.—General surface work and grading was done, and one portion of metal road was scarified, blinded with clay and metalled. Dunback Riding.—General surface work was done and metal graded in on the main highway from Bowker’s to Dunback. The Grange bridge requires attention. Green Valley Riding.—Crossings and creeks have received attention. High winds have blown much gravel off the road, which is bare in places, Macrae’s Riding.—General surface work lias been done on the main highway from Dunback to Macrae’s, and the highway to Moonlight has been surfaced. Other roads have also received attention, and further grading will be done as soon as possible. The report was adopted. RESIGNATION RECEIVED. In connection with the resignation of Mr John Stanley, grader driver, which had previously been accepted by the council, there was a lengthy discussion m committee, and it was decided that Mr Stanley should he exonerated from any blame in connection with allegations which might have been made against him. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Thomas Cousins (Morrisons) was granted permission to lay a two-inch pipe line across a side road near his house. An invitation to attend a young farmers', field day at Palmerston on October 2i was received and accepted. No. 16 District Highways Council advised that the Main Highways Board had no objection to traffic inspectors undertaking the supervision and enforcement of licensed services. The board had reason to believe that many group inspectors did not give to transport licensing matters the attention that circumstances required, and it had therefore been decided that a condition under which the highways subsidy on traffic inspection might he claimed would be that group inspectors should carry out the enforcement of these licenses. —Received. No. 16 District Highways Council advised that the collection'of £325 per annum for reconstruction and maintenance work on the Dunedin-Christchurch main highway would be commenced from December 1. The hoard would take over the maintenance of the highway from that date.—Received. r The Main Highways Board advised that the council’s offer of £IBO towards the cost of the Pleasant River bridge would be accepted provided the council also paid £27 towards the cost of preparing the proposals and supervising the work. —Received. GENERAL. Cr Ireland asked what attitude the council intended to take in regard to the cutting of cocksfoot on cou&ty roads by residents.—lt was decided to look into the position before next council meeting.
