THE DUNEDIN NORTH SEAT GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE MR A. S. FALCONER SELECTED Mr A. S, Falconer has consented to contest the Dunedin North seat in the interest of the National Government. His decision was made yesterday morning after a deputation representing, the National Government supporters in that electorate had waited upon him with a request that,he should accept nomination. The deputation followed a meeting of electors on Tuesday night, ~ui the choice of those present fell on Mr Falconer. He will, therefore, oppose Mr J. W. Munro, who at present represents the electorate in Parliament as a Labour member, and Mrs R. S. Black, who will contest the seat in the interest of the Democrat Party. Mr Falconer, who is 43 years of age, was born at Mosgiel and educated at the East Taieri School and the Mosgiel District High School. He left Port Chalmers in September, 1914, for service in the war, then holding the rank of sergeant.' During the next four years, during which he had a brilliant var career, he saw fighting in Egypt and France in addition to taking part in the landing at Gallipoli, He was awarded the D.S.O. and the M.C. and was tw‘ e mentioned in despatches. After spending some time in Germany at the close of the war he returned to New Zealand in May, 1919, with the rank of .a major. He later was a member of the Ot- *b Regiment (Territorial Force), retiring last year with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. Mr Falconer spent some four years farming in the Ashley Downs district, and was for some time an inspector p or the Yorkshire Insurance Company. For the last eight years he has been n business on his own account as a tobacconist. He is a foundation member and past president of Toe H, a past president of the Otago Officers’ Club, and president of the Dunedin Retail Tobacconists and Hairdressers’ Association. At the present time /he is president of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, but'in view of his decision to enter the political field Mr Falconer has placed his resignation in the hands of the executive. INVERCARGILL SEAT THE DEMOCRAT BANNER. Mr Gordon J. Reed, Deputy Mayor of Invercargill, has been selected as the Democrat candidate to contest the Invercargill seat at the general election, Mr Reed is a barrister and solicitor ( practising at Invercargill. A , LIBERAL CANDIDATE (Peb United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 14. As the result of representations made to him Mr William M'Chesney has announced that he will contest the Invercargill seat at the general election. He said he would stand as a Liberal, pledged to vote against the present Government on a motion of no-confidence. At the last general election Mr M'Chesney was a candidate in a threecornered contest and was second to Mr Hargest, being defeated by about 500 votes. He was Mayor of South Invercargill for 14 years, and is at present a member of the Southland Electric Power Board. AWARUA ELECTORATE Mr L. A. Niederer, of Invercargill, a member of the Southland County Council, has agreed to accept nomination for the Awarua seat in the interests of the Democrat Party. ■ THE OTAKI SEAT MR APPLETON’S CANDIDATURE. (Per 'United Press Association) . ' WELLINGTON, August 14. A deputation from the Otaki executive of the National Political Federation waited on Mr W. Appleton asking him to submit his name to a ballot for selection as the Nationalist .candidate. Mr Appleton said he could not accede to the request. He felt that if he consented it would not be honest to'the deputation of electors or himself because could not unreservedly support the National Party’s policy. He preferred to leave the decision entirely in the hands of the electors on polling day. RANGITIKEI SEAT DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE. (Per United Press Association) MARTON, August 14. It is announced that Mr W. J. Crawford, of Palmerston North, will contest the Raugitikei seat at the general election in the interests of the Democrat Party. He is a well-known master printer, and one of the city’s younger business rneii. A triangular contest now seems assured. ‘
