MILTON Hockey Representatives The following team lias been selected to represent South Otago in the women’s hockey match against Southland, to bo played at Invercargill next Saturday afternoon: —Goal, Miss Keach (Balclutho); full-backs, Misses V. Scott (Milton, captain), H. Morris (Bruce); halfbacks, Misses I. Morris (Bruce), L. Vidal (Milton), J. Gold (Clutha); forwards— Misses Myrtle Lillicrapp (Bruce), M. Scott (Milton), G. Vidal (Milton), K. Scott (Milton), R. Ki’eft (Bruce). Emergency, Miss N. Cannon (Milton). The team will leave by Saturday morning’s express, and return by Sunday night’s express. Mr P. Farrell will accompany the team as manager, and Mies Farrell as chaperone. Rugby Football The following referees have been appointed for next Saturday afternoon’s fixtures in the South Otago competitions:—Seniors: Toko v. Romahapa; at Milton (the Rev. M. A. M'Dowell); Owaka v. Clutha, at Balclutha (Mr Clark); Crescent v. Clinton, at Clinton (Mr Hampton). Boyd Cup competition: Union v. > Waiwera, at Clarksville (Mr E. Marshall); Toko v Clutha Valley, at Clydevale (Mr Caldwell); Crescent Woodlands, at Owaka (Mr Rendall. Third Grade: Owaka v. Crescent, at Kaitangata (Mr Good). For a match between South Otago High School and Otago High School- at Balclutha Mr Parker will be the referee.
Obituary Mr John Cullen, whose death occurred at his residence, Union street, on Saturday morning, was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1856. When about 19 years of age he sailed to New Zealand, and for about three years followed farming operations in Kaikorai Valley. He afterwards went gold mining at Horseshoe Bend, near Beaumont, and eventually removed to Milton about 23 years ago, where be worked for about five yeats at the Bruce Woollen Mills. Mr Cullen was twice married, and is survived by his widow, seven daughters (of whom six are married), and one son. Requiem Mass was celebrated vesterday morning by the Rev. Father Rooney. Mr Cullen had been connected with the Foresters’ Order for the lengthy period of 55 years. BALCLUTHA Rugby Football At a meeting of the Management Com-, mittee of the South Otago Rugby Football Sub-union, J. G. M'Laren, of the Romahapa team, was suspended for the rest of the season, for questioning the referee’s decision in _ the Star-Romahapa senior game at Stirling on July 13. M'Laren was also charged with using bud language when, leaving the playing area after being ordered off. J. Bartlett (Southern) was granted a transfer to Crescent (Kaitangata). The Second Grade matches played on Saturday resulted: —Crescent .15, Toko 3; Waiwera 8, Woodlands 3; Union 19, Valley nil. , Personal
Mr Alex. Sutherland, of Rosebank, who met with au accident in May, and spent some time in hospital, is.now convalescent, although still under doctor’s orders. On Mav 21, Mr Sutherland, who bad been cycling homeward from the town, was picked up unconscious in the gutter next to a telegraph pole in South Clyde street. He was suffering from cuts on the head and face, and it was thought that he had been struck by a “ hit-and-run ” motorist, but there was no proof of that, and he, owing to the shock, has not been able to remember what actually did occur.
