TRANSPORT SERVICES
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—ln the interest of public safety I hope that a thorough inquiry will be made as to the cause of the accident to a service car in the vicinity of the Waiwera bridge last Friday morning. Owing solely to the fact that the accident happended on a fairly safe piece. of road no one was injured, except for a few bruises. Had it occurred less than three chains further on, a fatality would most certainly have been the result. Will you enlighten me as to how often these old buses are examined by the authorities who grant the licenses? —I am, etc., .Safety First. [Every passenger service vehicle must secure a certificate of fitness once a year. That constitutes a license to carry passengers, but enforcement officers have authority to board and inspect a vehicle at any time. In addition to this any person haying reasonable cause to believe that a licensed vehicle is unsafe may report the matter to the authorities and doubtless, in these circumstances, an inspection would be made. Unless a person is injured as the result of a mishap it need not be reported to the police. If any structural damage is suffered it should be reported to the authorising officer of the Transport Department at Dunedin. — Ed. O.D.T.]
