Sproat left by the second express on Saturday, en route for Wellington, to attend a teachers’ conference there. Mr N. S. Falla, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon. Mr Philip Palmer, who has received a teaching appointment at the Lower Hutt School, left by the mid-day expitss on Saturday. Mr J. A. Hanan, chancellor of the University of New Zealand, who visited Christchurch for the purpose of conferring degrees at Canterbury College, returned to Dunedin on Saturday. Arising out of the reorganisation of the railway staff, Mr G. T. Wilson, district traffic manager in Auckland, has been appointed transport superintendent, with headquarters at Wellington. Mr H. J. Guthrie left by the second express on Saturday, en route for Mexico City, via Chicago. At Mexico City Mr Guthrie, who is a director-elect of the Rotary International, will attend the world conference of Rotary. Mr A. C. Mills, late manager of the National Bank, Otautau, left by the through express on Saturday on the first stage of a world tour. It was announced at the Auckland Art Society’s exhibition on Saturday that the Bledisloe landscape medal for 1935 had been awarded to Mr John Weeks for his oil painting, “After the Shower, Waitakere Ranges.” Mr A. F. Nicoll won the prize in 1932 and Dr J. C. Duncan in 1934.
