RETURN TO AMERICA

THE BYRD EXPEDITION PRESIDENT GREETS EXPLORER WASHINGTON, May 10. (Received May 12, at 6.30 p.m.) The ice-scarred Bear of Oakland, carrying Admiral Byrd and more than 100 men, pushed its way up the Potomac to dock late to-day. The expedition received a tumultuous welcome. President Roosevelt and members of th Cabinet greeted the explorer, praising the expedition for the gain it had made in human knowledge and for its efforts in the furtherance of the progress of civilisation Admiral Byrd said: “If I could have rubbed Aladdin’s lamp and could have had a wish as to the kind of welcome I would select for my men and myself, the wish would have been to have our President welcome us back. This single act of yours is an adequate reward for anything which the expedition may have done for science.”
