RADIO BROADCASTING

TO TUE EDITOB

Sir, 1 -Last night (Wednesday), at my home we were anxious for the results of the elections and had expected the news from 4YA, but for over an hour we had to listen to the greatest trash in the form of so-called jazz dance music. Surely the management must be lacking in taste. If there are a few listeners who expect such rot. why inflict it continuously? I wish the 4YA authorities couJd tell when listeners cut off and go to a B station. I am sure their eyes ought at least to be opened.—l am, etc., Disgusted, Listener. [lnvestigation suggests that our correspondent has not been careful in presenting his complaint. All the national stations work on scheduled programmes, which are interrupted only by events of major importance. The local elections were regarded as coming within that category. Up to the hour of 9 o'clock on Wednesday available elections results were broadcast at intervals from 4YA and 4YO; From 9 until 10 o'clock a theme programme was broadcast from 4YA, but before the introduction of it the announcer intimated that during its presentation election results would be broadcast from 4YO. On its conclusion a summary of election results was given from 4YA. The published schedule programme of'djncc music followed, but this was not continuous, as election results were interspersed as they became available. Our correspondent appears to dislike jazz dance music, but as the national stations endeavour te cater fcr the varied tastes of listeners it would be impossible, to eliminate'this class of music from radio programmes. Those in control of the national stations assure us that they will at all times be pleased to consider constructive proposals for the improvement of radio programmes.—Ed., O.D.T.]

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In your issue _ of even date, " Listener " makes certain statements regarding 4YA and its announcement of the Christchurch election results, which are absolutely contrary \o fact. I was listening to three receiving .sets, one on Wellintrton, one on Christchurch aud one on Dunedin, and have no hesitation in stating that I heard 4YA announce the result of the Christchurch mayoral election within two to three minutes of the time it w - as first announced by SVA. "Listener" states that there vas a lone delay between the announcement from 3YA and the relay from the- Council Chambers. This is twite correct, and it was no doubt during this delay that "Listener" missed the announcement from 4YA, which announcement was followed by a resume of progress results. I hold no brief for 4YA, nor am I acquainted with any of the staff, but in justice to those who are receiving an unwarranted stab in the back I t'eel it is onlv. right that I should state the facts as 1 know them.—l am, etc.; D. J. M'Leou. Dunedin, May 10.
