STREET COLLECTIONS
RESTRICTIONS IN LONDON Further restrictions hi the number of flag days are to be sought by the Advisory Committee in Street Collections (Metropolitan Police District), whose report for 1934 has been submitted to Lord Trenchard, Commissioner ot Police. During last year, the committee states, 209 applications for holding street collections were considered. 17 were refused, and the 239 collections actually made £235.985. This was the .smallest number of collections held in a year since 1910. but the amount raised was irreatei' than in the two previous years. The two outstanding collections, Poppy Day and Alexandra Day, as in previous years, accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total. Stating that on one day there were no fewer than 17 collections, the committee observes: "With the co-operation of the charitable institutions the committee hopes to effect still further reduction of the number of days on which collections are held, and steps have been taken to ensure that during 1935 no more than one general collection shall take place in any one week/' Action has also been taken to restrict collections by societies whose appeal is only to one section of the community.
