BALCLUTHA Personal Mr D. Freezing Works The Finegand freezing works are thie week more than 20,000 ahead of the total of sheep and lamb killings at this time last year. ALEXANDRA Borough Council The last ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Tue§> dav evening, the Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presiding. The District Highways Council wrote asking for the boroughs estimates for the current year. —It was decided to make application for a subsidy on the tar-Beal-ing of the balance of the main highway from the monument to the railway line on the town boundary.—lt was pointed out that the granting of the subsidy would not in any way commit the council to g» on with the work. The matter could further be considered by the new council. The Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League wrote asking if the couscil would purchase, as an appropriate commemoration of the silver jubilee, a facsimile colour reproduction of his Majesty the King by John A. A. Barrie, R.C.A.—It was decided to purchase a copy. The Mayor reported that at the invitation .of Mr W. A. Bodkin; M.P., the conservator of forests for the district (Mr Dolamore) visited the district on Tuesday. In company with Mr Bodkin, Mr Lindup (the resident engineer of the Public Work 3 Department) and himself he had visited the Butcher's Gully dam site, the object being the inauguration of a comprehensive afforestation plan for the district. Mr Dolamore expressed himself as being favourably impressed with the prospects, and he would report in due course to the Minister.—The council decided to make application to the Minister for a nursery to be established and an afforestation scheme undertaken for the district. As it was the last meeting of the council that Crs Munro and Hull would attend, the Mayor extended to them hie thanks for their support and assistance during their term of office.—Crs Munro and Hull suitably replied. Personal Mr and Mrs Joshua Wright, of the Earnscleugh district, have disposed of their property, and will leave the district at an early date for Oamaru. Miss A. Buckingham, of Dunedin, hoe been appointed to the clerical staff of the Central Otago Power Board.
