STARTING LIFE ANEW

SEQUEL TO PEPPER GAMBLE Ruined in the great pepper gamble, Mr Joseph D. Rolls, once senior partner in Messrs Rolls and Son, general produce brokers, is starting life anew at 68. He is to work at a salary for the newly-formed firm—Rolls and Son (Produce), Ltd. —which has just been registered with a capital of £35,000. Fifteen of the staff of 20 thrown out of work by the collapse of Lis old business have been taken on by the new firm, the remaining five having work elsewhere. " I lost everything I had in the crash, and I have £2O to-day," he said to an interviewer. " I wanted to retire in peace and spend the rest of my life quietly with my dog and my cat. But my staff, many of whom have served me for over 20 years, must live. Now they have their jobs back at the same salaries as before And I am working too —as market man. "When my firm crashed offers came in for my men from several places. Mv friends behaved marvellously. Through them this new firm has been formed, and we shall go on almost as before. " But I am an old man now, and my career is a wreck," he said. "My staff were loyal to me for 20 years and I could not see them starve. Thanks to my friends this has been prevented."
