THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam out faciam." DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, APRIL 30th, 1864.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

Tiie rush to Marlborough is already assuming somewhat large dimensions. We are informed of persona from all parts of the Middle Island and from Wellington are wending their way to this latest El Dorado. Wages arestated to have risen in the neighboring towns to thrice their normal rate; a j large advance on ordinary prices is asked , for goods and supplies of all sorts; lucrative situations are being thrown up; persons are rushing to the gold field unmindful of the hardships they will have to undergo, bearing in mind the what to them seems certain profits—in short, in the Provinces of Nelson and Marlborough are to be discovered all those evidences of social disorganisation which attend the first discovery of gold deposits. What Victoria and Otago have before gone through is now commencing for the two Provinces, one of which contains, and the other borders on the new Gold Field. Local circumstances may modify but will not alter the conditions that are inseparably connected with fresh gold discoveries. ... During the sitting of the Provincial Council last evening, the fierce showers of rain pelting ,on the iron roof of St. George’s Hall (there being no ceiling) rendered it at time impossible to hear the speakers; and there were complaints of the coldness of the hall. , Hats on and great coats thrown over the shoulders were the order of the evening with many honorable members. , At the monthly meeting of the Second New Zealand and Mutual Investment Society, held last evening, twenty-three shares of £6O each were sold at a premium averaging £2O I3s per share. The inaugural address in connection with the Educational Institute of Otago will be delivered in St. Andrew's Church, Walker street, on Saturday next, the 7th May, by Mr J. Hislop, Secretary and Inspector of the Education Board. A pigeon match for £IOO will take place this afternoon, at three o’clock, at the Vauxhall Gardens. General Cameron has been made a K.C.B. in recognition of his services m New Zealand. His title, will now be Sir A. D. Cameron. , The Commission of the Presbytery of Otago, under the convenership of the Rev. D. M. Stuart, met on Wednesday in Green Island Church. After a suitable discourse from the Rev. J. H. M’Naughton, the Rev. Michael Watt was unanimously elected to be minister of the parish. It is understood that Mr Walt is prepared to accept the call. With reference to the Waikamarina Gold Diggings, the “ Marlborough Press ” says:—“ One thing we wish most earestly to press upon such of our readers as may be deliberating about going to the Waikamarina,. and that is simply this: at the present time the only spot where gold baa at all been found in payable quantities is in the Waikamarina River; and, as there is necessarily but a limited extent of country, it is quite impossible to say how, many'miles of it has already been taken up. It should be remembered by intending voyagers that in e very few weeks from this the winter will have set in, accompanied by its usual heavy floods, which will prevent any further operations in the bed and low parts of the banks of the river, from which places hitherto the whole of the gold has been taken.”
