•.-v..' By Divot. FIXTURE FOR SATURDAY. Otago Golf Club.—Exhibition fnatch by Gene'Sarazen. - • , . OTAGO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Three matches of the Club Championship, were played on Saturday, one match being postponed. G. Gibson put up a very good performance against K., Ros.s, and wa fi defeated only at the seventeenth green. Gibson was 1 up at M'Glashan, but from this point Ross played superlative golf,'and bad four birdies'out of the succeeding five holes. ; Gibson was entirely unable to cope ■ with this, and Ross eventually won the match 3' and 1. The match between J. R. Laidlaw arid T. B.; Ferguson was a very close one, arid Ferguson appeared to lie a sure winner when-he was 2up and 3 tci'play. Laidlaw; however, produced good figures over the last three holes,, by holing missable putts, with the result that he won the three of them, to finish 1 up. C. T. Irwin was unable ■to produce the golf he played on the previous Saturday when he defeated, J. A- Scouler, and had to accept defeat from J. G- Dick at the fourteen; h green, where D ; .ck was 5 up. B;. .V. Wright arid J. W. M'lntosh have still to'play their second round. : ' v ST. CLAIR CLUB ' There was a disappointing field at tne St. Clair Club Fourball Bogey Match on Saturday, but the scoring wag of a consistently high standard". ' F-- H. Elson .and J. Sara'zen's' fame is such that it : is not by any means unlikely that a'large number of .people who have hitherto shown' no great, interest in golf will join what is. expected to be a large gathering in order to see golf, played by a master. ' INTERCLUB MATCH The" weather 'conditions, were , ideal at Balmaceweri when the ihterclub shield matches- between the' Otago and Christchurch clubs were played,. The Otago team had a great advantage in playing on its own links, and-it is not surprising, to find'that, both shields were.won by the local team. By recognising the influence that local knowledge plays in such team events it .is not .intended to deprecate the quality of the local, players. ■ Notwithstanding that owing -to ill-health B. V. Wißbt was unable to play for Otago, the Otago club team is dtie which will challenge comparison ■ with that of any other club in New Zealand. The only match won by the visitors-was that in which R. C. Arnould defeated.K. Ross. This game was a great match in which the first 10 holes were-halved. and Ross obtained'the first win by holing out in four at Tip-, perary." ■ Aiter. that, Ross had two bad holes; and the steady Christchurch player to6k full i advantage iof." this, and gained a lead of one up, which he retained until the eighteenth; .In all the other Singles the local players were successful, and in the majority of cases by , a -.- substantial margin., D. H. ; Butcher, an * ex-Otago player, • whose • rcpiitatiori as a match player is not forgotten, proved hie worth against J- G.; Dick by carrying the game to the last green. In the fianmer. Shield Foursome ! Match, Otago-..' players were again outstanding, and ,won every match, the biggest margin, being that: in which Rbiss and Sime defeated Dou'gall and Anipuld-by s'up. '. ' ' ' ' ~ ■These matches ' we're the result ; 'of • a ret-iirn ivisit,.Otago .having played Christchurch''on Shirley -.earlier in the.: year, when Christchurch-won hy a.narrow;margin, :6p- that in' the series the Otago players have' a distinct advantage.' _ yinterClub. matches are, becoming increasingly, popular, and it is certain that this' fixture will become-an annual one in fact, as well as in.intention. ■-. /•,.; : OTAGO v. ST. CLAIR. i The intercliib match;-between Otago, arid-St.'- Clair "has been 'arranged'.far' coniing week-end, and will be held' the" Corstorphine links; This v fixture has been put upon a definite basis and will consist of,, a competition, between, a team of eight, from each club; Instead of fourball, matches, foursomes will- be played in the morning, and a cup will be held by the club having the "best record in the series • of; four? home : to-home -matches' which will be held each year,. , -. .-.-. \ BELLEKNOWES CLUB The Beliekriowes Ladies' Golf Club held -its final ; "match of the season- on Saturday . under 'ideal .conditions.' In "conjunction a Sealed-hole'Match was also .played for . the captain's ' (Miss MlLeqd). trophy,' the winner .in this case lieimi Miss Laffey. • After these matches the members were the guests of Miss M'Leod at afternoon tea, thus bririging. the season to a; pleasant close. • ,- , : ~ ST.
