J lie British Minister of Agriculture recently opened a pumping station in Norfolk to drain the heart of the Fens and to deal with the flood waters of two rivers. The station includes one of the largest pumping installations in the world and cost £224,000. The scheme is to deal with the shrinkage or settlement of the whole of the general level area of 175,000 acres, which during the last 50 years had subsided in some places as much as six feet. The pumps installed to reclaim what is considered some of the most fertile land in England are more powerful than anything in Holland, and the area that will he brought under cultivation represents a value of £3,000.000. At the opening ceremony of the new station it was stated that 70 per cent, of the labour had been obtained from the distressed mining areas, and that many of the men had found permanent work in the district following the completion of the scheme.
