NOTES ON THE RACING

COPYIST WINS IN GOOD STYLE. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, October 20. Chile won the Hurdle Race very comfortably, and the fact that Revision ran off at the last fence did not affect the result, as Chile then had the issue well in hand. He is a well-bred flat failure, being a brother to the Derby winner, Agrion. and the recent A.J.C. Metropolitan winner, Wailkare, but he won a hurdle race at the Grand National meeting and has since impi-oved a lot. Revision would have been second had she not run off, but Illuminate, who made the pace, was tired, and just held on from Pahu. who made up ground but never looked dangerous. A small-field -contested the Two-year-old Handicap, which was won in solid fashion by Mr T. H.Lowry's colt, Haut Monde. He was always in front, and just held on in a hard finish from the southern filly Hororata. Hororata mayhave been a bit unlucky, on the day, as she was giving tflie winner four or five lengths' start entering the course proper, but Haut Monde is likely to improve the more. They outclassed the others. Might scored a very solid win in the Wainui Handicap over a mile. He was back in the rear for the first half, but once he made his run he overhauled and cut down the leaders to win going away. It was a very tine effort, and he is n greatly improved horse. Mother Superior ran her best race, making all the running. Vintage, who started favourite, ran a good race, being always prominent and oucrht to improve. Princess Dorcen and Sporting Blood both failed to stay the distance, but the latter, ought to improve, as also should The Aga Khan. Cricket Bat ran a very good race tor a fresh horse. , „

Grand Sport, who looks in splendid condition, got up in the last stride to head the light-weight Flammarion in the Hack Seven after Flammarion had tried to win all the way. Flammarion was coupled with Flamingo, who was never in the huntHunting Lodge and Pladie were always handy and had every change, and there did not appear to be any reasonable excuse for the failure of the favourite, Dombey Dawn. Princess, who is only a maidep, ran an excellent race and looked dangerous at-the last furlong post. Spiral revealed his fine form to win decisively in the Wellington Handicap from the favourite, Red Manfred, and the wellbacked Davolo. Spiral .was always well placed and travelling smoothly. Ellis tucked him in behind the pacemaker, Lady Ronald, and from there he got a perfect, and uninterrupted run. Davolo and Red Manfred, who were always running handily, came at Spiral in the straight, but while they ran on solidly he fought them off courageously. Walton Park, Hazoor, Catalogue, Lady Ronald, and Polydora did the best of the others. Polydora was in the rear for most- of the running, but finished on well. The winner was in the New Zealand Cup, but dropped out at the last acceptance on Friday. On his day he is a good horse, and this was one of them.

Legatee finished up favourite over Severe for the Wellesley Stakes, which saw a very disappointing field of only four. The public were on the wrong way, but they were unlucky, as Legatee received a bump from Nightlass as he pulled out to challenge Severe at the false rail. When he recovered he put in some great work, but, although he was fast overhauling Severe, it was too late. Penelope weakened after showing a brilliant'dash up to the front at the false, rail. ;■' ',..'. Copyist produced a win for the south in the Shorts Handicap. He was always in front with Pin Money, and running on. well in the straight, he fought off a' strong challenge by Palermo. Cawbeen and Pin Money held their early places to run next, with a bunch all handy. AutoEay got off well, and had every chance, ut Copyist put up a smart performance and proved too good at the weights. Korero put in an appearance on the rails in the straight in the concluding event, and scored very comfortably from West Tor, who had looked likely at the false rail. West Tor was always prominent, but Korero came from a fair way back. Dorado was always in the picture, but the fourtlrhorse Davistock came from the very last at the five furlongs. He, looked unlucky. Cyclonic, had every chance, and Cherry King, though fairly handy in the middle stages, was actually, the last horse past the post. This, however, is not his right form. Top Coats name was being hailed at the seven fur-, longs when he forged up, but he did not. run it right out. , >
