(Received Oct. 21, at 10 p.m.) There was fine weather and an enormous attendance for the races. The Duke of Gloucester arrived- after the second race and remained to present the cup to the winning owner. Quarto was fortunate to defeat the fastfinishing Ronsant in the Burwood Handicap. The rider, M'Ca'rten,.'won the event, previously on Shakuni. Quarto was bred in New Zealand. Princess Cynthia, a sister to Hall Mark, had an appropriate' win in the Mona Nursery. . She is owned by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sir Gengotilt Smith. She led throughout. She is named after the Lord Mayor's wife. : I; Whernside finished strongly in the Gwyn Nursery. He is trained by A.. Hawthorn and owned by Mr W. R. Kemball. The New Zealander Teak was a disappointment •'.•■' Journal, in a brilliant run, won the Cup in the last few strides,. Farndale ran a great race, and Sir Simper made a wonderful effort at the last, but at the home turn was certainly beaten. Knbx, the rider of the winner, won previously with Denis Boy. A remarkable feature of the race -was that Journal and Farndale were the last two at seven furlongs. Rogilla ran a good race, and his rider, Darby-Munro, states that"the weight beat liini. Knox said Joutnal began slowly, but put in a great run in the final stages. Moran, the. rider 0f... Farndale, said he thought he had the race won at the straight entrance, but Journal was too good. Dempsey said Sir Simper was field shy, and the position near the rails beat him, but in the circumstances the horse gave.-a remarkable performance. Journal is liable to a rchandicap in'the Melbourne Cup There was a good finish in the Wyuna Steeplechase. A. Fairbanks, the rider of Mitten in the Steeplechase, hit the rail with his left leg at the straight entrance, and suffered a compound fracture of the left tibia and fibula. He showed great fortitude in, finishing."... ."."' Pollyspeck was prominent always, and had a comfortable win in the Windsor Handicap. Silver Ring tired with his weight of 9.11. Mr Kemball's pair, Morbiiry and Staghorn, were never dangerous.
