THE TRAM STRIKE
BOARD’S OFFER TO MEN HALF OF SURPLUS PROFITS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, October 18. It is reported that the Tramways Board offered to pay the men half of the surplus profits of the centenary period as a bonus. This was the outcome of a conference with Trades Hall officials last night. The bonus, it is estimated, would amount to about £6OOO. The proposal will be placed before the strikers’ executive to-day. Meanwhile there will he no trams. NO SIGN OF SETTLEMENT MELBOURNE, October 18. (Received Oct. 18, at 9 p.m.) So far there is no sign of a settlement of the tramway strike. The tramway board’s decision will come before a mass meeting of tramwaymen to-morrow. Meanwhile the union leaders declare that the board’s offer cannot possibly be accepted. The employees from tramway depots have all been withdrawn, including all those who were allowed to remain until yesterday.
