WOMEN’S GOLF

THE INTER-ISLAND MATCH WIN FOR THE NORTH (Peb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 20. The annual New Zealand ladies’ golf championship tournament was commenced at Titirangi links to-day in beautifully fine weather, the course and greens being fast. The main contest to-day was that between teams representing the North and the South Islands, the former winning for the fifth year in succession by five matches to three. Although the play of Misses Kay and Gaisford was not up to championship standard, the contest between the pair was a keen and interesting one. Miss Kay was twice 3 up, but Miss Gaisford squared the match at the seventeenth, only to play the last badly and lose by one. Results; Mrs Dodgshun (Dunedin) beat Miss P. Helean (Wanganui) 3 and 2. Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) beat Miss W. Barns-Graham (Gisborne) 1 up. Miss 0. Stevens (North Shore) beat Miss B. Rutherford (Christchurch) 4 and 3. Miss E, Culling (Auckland) beat Mrs M'Carthy (Dunedin) 2 and 1. , Miss M. Stevens (North/Shore) beat Miss J. Stevenson (Christchurch) 5 and 3, Mrs D. Stout (Wellington) heat Mis# B. Holmes (Christchurch) 2 and 1. Mrs G. F. Ferguson (Auckland) beat Miss Turton (Nelson) 5 and 4. Mies 0. Kay (Dunedin) beat Miss B. Gaisford (Marton) 1 up. The outstanding feature of the play was the afternoon round of 75 by Miss W. Barns-Graham, of Gisborne. This established a new record for the course, the previous figures of 76 standing to the credit of Miss 0. Kay. Miss BarnsGraham had given evidence in her morning interisland match that she was in good form by registering three birdies, but she was far more consistent in the afternoon. Miss Barns-Graham is the first player to equal the ladies’ scratch score for the course. She was one over at the turn but came home one under the scratch score, picking up a stroke at the long seventeenth. Her card read: Out—4, 4,4, 5,5, 5,3, 4, 4;—38. In—s, 3,5, 5,3, 4,4, 4, 4;—37.

Miss 0. Stevens followed up her morning success by returning an afternoon card of 80, going out in 39 and returning in 41. y Miss Gaisford scratched for the bogey handicap to rest for the championship play, while Miss Kay tore up her card, her figures being disappointing.

Members of the Australian team did not perform up to expectations, at least two of them, Miss J. Hammond and Mrs Robinson (the captain) returning poor cards of 9 down and 7 down respectively. Miss MacLeod was 2 down and Miss Bailey and Miss Lascelles each 3 down. The visitors appeared to be unable to gauge accurately and consistently the strength of the fast greens. Miss Hammond, for instance, played an excellent long game, but her approaching and putting were weak. ST. CLAIR LADIES’ CLUB. On Tuesday the St. Kilda Golf Club medal foursomes match was won oy Mrs Bennie and Mrs Taylor, 105—22 —83. The bisques match played yesterday was won by Miss Eve Watson, 5 down, Miss N. Thompson, 6 down, being runner-up. On Tuesday the L.G.U. medal match will be played, and on Thursday a 1 Sealed Holts match will take place.
