The chairman congratulated the committee and the competitors on the success of the festival, and thanked all who had helped. He acknowledged the presence of the Bishop of Dunedin (Bishop Fitchett), who had visited the town for the occasion.
The president (the Rev, F. J. Ferry) acknowledged the kindness of the Mayor for presiding, and thanked the committee for their untiring efforts. He also thanked the judges, Miss Leonore Mackenzie and Miss Rona Beale, and Messrs C. Roy Spackman, D. Whelan and W. Budge. Miss Mackenzie, who judged the elocution, said that it had given her a good deal of pleasure to act as judge because the work was of a good standard, particularly that of the juveniles. The entries in the adult classes were disappointing in numbers. Miss Mackenzie suggested that the committee should arrange a class for a test recitation in future. The competitions had been well organised, and it must have been gratifying to the committee—-as it had been
for the judges—to observe the enthusiasm displayed by the public in the festival.
Mr D.' Whelan, judge of the instrumental music, also had a good word to say about the younger competitors. They had all given a reasonably good performance. From the seniors he expected better, and urged both sections to cultivate more tune and tone. The latter had been starved by some competitors. Mr Whelan gave some sound advice to players on the matter of proper breathing, and he complimented the committee on including brass instrumental music in the programme. The following are the results of the piping sections:—
Piping, Novice (seven entries). —Piper Gibson 1, Piper J. Gordon' 2. Piping, Open (four entries). —Piper A. Pearce 1, Piper Gibson 2. Mr W. Budge was the judge.
