GOLF

: By Divot. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Otago Club,—Fourball Bogey Handicap. St. Clair Bogey. ST.- GLAIR CLUB The final of the. Knock-put,, between D. S. M'Lean and{ J: Luff, Vvajs b, close : match in Which some good golf was played. had to";concede Lull 14 strokes, tvKicli proved on the' day to be very good handicapping. In the first half Luff made one or two mistakes on. the green which enabled M‘Lean to build up a useful lead. Luff took three putts on each of the third and fourth greens and, althpugh his long gaine was really above the standard’ one expectsfrom a 24 handicap, man,; for the first nine holes he missed several opportunities on. the; ! short game. - M'Lcan _ was, therefore, 1 jji the comfortable position of 4 tip after: ; 10 holes . had been played. From here 1 on, however, Luff gave a taste of his , fighting powers, and. produced golf of . the j Lind which had led to the. downfall of several favourites in the earlier rounds. ; A good four at the eleventh reduced the j deficit to 3.. . Promontory was halved, ; Lu 3 iising a handicap stroke for the purpose and “ Old Nick ” was halved. At “ Sea View ” Luff used another stroke for a win and he then won “ Stocks ” on level tenns. He was now only one down, and M'Lean’s position was by no , means secure in view of the fact that be had to give away a stroke each at the sixteenth' and Home holes. At “Boundary” the result was a half, and M‘Lean I holed a long putt ’at “Mukden” for anI other half to be dormie, Both had good drives at the Home hole, but a poor second by APLean increased his, difficulties I considerably. As Luff, was sure, of a 5 MTiean found it necessary to hole a I very ‘long putt 1 for a' 4 to halve the ! hole and win the match. It says a good | deal for his. temperament that he made ' no mistake with the putt and the match was his by a margin of one. M'Lean is probably one _of the best left-handers in Otago. He is a powerful driver, and, unlike, most left-handers, a tendency to - stray from the straight and narrow is not one of his .marked characteristics. For a long time his greatest bugbear was his short, game, but recently this has shown a great improvement. He is .to be- congratulated - upon his success in -the. Knock-out Competition, as' this is one of the most difficult. competitions in the programme to win. .. Next week the Four-ball Bogey Match which has been postponed on two occasions oh account of .unfavourable weather will, be played. ; The scoring in the Medal Match played by .the Bt. Clair Club on Saturday was not generally of a high-standard. F. H. Elsom had a good card of 70 net to. win the senior event, and M. H. Tomkinson returned a. card of 68 net to win the junior by five clear strokes. OTAGO CLUB ' Some time ago the new standard, scratch score of Balmacewen was reduced by. one stroke to 73. The handicaps of playing members was consequently increased by one stroke; but so far the new'score has not been applied. On Saturday the new cards will; be available, and '.will be used in the, Bogey event to be played. The attention of competitors is drawn to the fact, that the S.S. score for the first hole has been reduced to 4 and that the card has ■ consequently been considerably amended as regards the. holes where, handicap strokes are received. , At. least four members from Otago will play 'at Wanganui in the New Zealand championship meeting to be held there frbm October 5-13. These are J. A. ; Scoulqr,: K.;; Ross;? A. G. Siine,, and B. Bi’ascn.. ; At; the time of writing.- B. A. j fright, the„ amateur; champion, .has, -not yet.: been - advised, that ..leave has; been ■granted, to .him. ■ It would be an extremely unfortunate.. thing if the, holder , was. prevented. from defending his .title# hut no. doubt leave will be forthcoming durihg the next -day or two. OTAGO LADIES’ CLUB ; ,1 ..Mrs Milne, played steady golf' on Tues- ’ day. to' win the ,A Grade section of the ? Medal Match played at Balmacewen, - Her card was 89—15—74. Mrs MTvellar and 'Mrs Earnshaw tied for ■ the, B Grade : section- each with 75 net. Last Thursday a.. Medal ■Foursomes competition -was ■ played, and was won by Mrs Johnstone and Mrs La wry, 111-—36 — 15. 1 • On Tuesday next .the first round of the Knock-out Competition for the Ada Jack Cup will be played. AUCKLAND LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP Local golfers will be pleased, at- the success of Miss 0. Stevens in winning the Auckland Ladies’ Championship. Miss Stevens is an ex-Otago ami St. Clair player who, on several occasions, Has been very close, to winning major honours in tournament golf. The runner-up was Miss Culling. The. final was a very close match, which provided an interesting game, for a large gallery. Miss Stevens was , 2 up at the turn, but, she lost the tenth to Miss Culling’s 4. Miss Stevens recovered grandly to, within a few feet 'of the pin at the eleventh, to have the hole conceded her when Miss Culling sliced her second into the donga—Miss Stevens 2 up. Miss Culling played the better brassy to the twelfth, but again failed to .push home her advantage, and the hole was halved in 5. With a glorious iron to the middle of the thirteenth green a win to Miss Culling was indicated when her opponent’s tee shot found the short bunker, but a great recoveryand a longish putt gave Miss Stevens the half. After poor seconds to the fourteenth Miss Culling recovered better to take the hole and reduce her deficit to one. After scrappy play by both, Miss Culling’missed a putt for the win at the fifteenth, but’she Squared the match at the sixteenth, which she; won in 5 after her opponent had visited the green bunker, bliss Culling outplayed her op- j ponent to the seventeenth, but missed a 1 five-foot putt for the win in 4. With . the strain right on both drove long balls to the eighteenth, _ and Miss . Stevens | reached the green with a beautifully hit i iron. Faced with a difficult shot over the guarding bunkers, Miss Culling failed to get through the ball, caught the blinker, and a great match was over. ,In the. semi-finals Miss Culling beat Miss Barns-Grah.am 4 and 2, and Miss Stevens . beat. Mrs J, M. Wilson at the nineteenth. j ST. CLAIR LADIES* CLUB I i A Medal Foursomes Competition w.as played- at St. Clair on Tuesday. There , was . a -stiffish breeze blowing, and this militated against good scoring. Mrs Taylor and Mrs Bennie, with a score, oi; S 3, .won ’ the event. THE BLEDISLOE’ CUP His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord BledislOe, has offered the Council a challenge- cup-'.for -annual- competition. It will, be ■ competed- for the first time at Wanganui on.
