WINTER MEETING OPENED PALMARY WINS THE CUP. STEEPLES TO ECCLEFECHAN. (Peb United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, May 11. The winter meeting of the Southland Racing Club was opened to-day in beautiful weather. There was a good attendance, and the track was very heavy. The win and place totalisator handled £6149 10s, against £6093 10s last year. Following are the results; — TRIAL HANDICAP, ' Of SOsovs, Sis furlongs. 1/I—J. In the run home Mountain Jewel was always a winner, to score by two lengths from Black Shadow, with Vacation half a length back, and then Bright Voyage. Leckie) 1 5/4—MISS REDOWA, 7.0 (MacKinnon) 2 3/3—MASTER ANOMALY. 8.0 (G. Humphries) 3 Also started; 2/1- All Humbug 9.3, 4/5 Enwood- 7.7. Miss Redowa and All Humbug made the early running from Master Anomaly. Waterpower was last, where she stayed till the straight entrance. She then put in a paralysing run and beat Aliss Redowa by three-quarters of a length. Master Anomaly , was the same distance away, followed by All Humbug. Time, Imin 18sec. ROSLYN HANDICAP. It was a great race at the distance but Double Shot stayed on to beat Brown Pearl by half a-length. Mayam, who finished well, was a neck away, and then First Song. Time, Imin 33,1-ssec. Lister’s b g PALMARY (Paladin —Bonne Bouche), 6yrs, 7.0 (Messer vey) 1 2/I—SIGNALLER. 7.0 (Eastwood) .. 2 4/4—BLACK DUKE, 7.0 (Jones) .. 3 Also started: 7/7 The Smuggler 9.4. 6/5 Steeton 7.13, 8/8 Palermo 7.10, 1/2 Toreador 8.0, 5/6 Jack a Dandy 7.1. Steeton and Jack a Dandy were first to show out. Then Steeton went on from Black Duke. The Smuggler, and. .Jack a Dgndy. Palmary was last. At the far turn Toreador closed on the leaders and into the straight Black Duke, Jack a Dandy and Toreador were in line ahead of Signaller and Steeton. In the straight Palmary came fast wide out and beat Signaller nicely by a length. Black Duke was three lengths away and then Steeton. Time, 2min Iflsec.. STEEPLECHASE, Of 125sovs. About two miles, 5/5—W. H. Campbell’s b g ECCLEFECHAN (Panmure —Caroline), aged, 9.0 (Low) .. .. .. ..- 1 7/7—FATHER O’FLYNN, 9.0 (Pope) 2 3/4—CALHAM, 9.13 (Voight) 3 Also started: 6/6 Quinopal 11.7, 8/8 West Dome 11.0, 4/3 Umtali 10.9, 3/4 French Fleet 10.7 (coupled with Calham), 1/2 Dunmure 10.4, 2/1 Andy 9.6. French Fleet and Ecclefechan made the running from Andy and Calham. At the second of the stand double Quinopal baulked. At the sod wall Umtali lost his rider and Dunmure followed suit at the. next. Entering the straight again West Dome dropped his rider, and Ecclefechan and French Fleet led Calham and Father O’Flynn. At the fence at five furlongs French Fleet fell, and Eccle-

Nicol’s b m HONEST MAID (Paladin —Honesty), 4yrs, 8.1 (C. Humphries) 1 2/4—ROWLANDS, 7.9 (Eastwood) 2 6/S—WYNWQOD, 7.0 (Jones) .... 3 Also started; 4/2 Island Linnet 9.0, 5/6 Thornton 7.12, 7/7 Red Terror 7.8, 3/3 Johnny 7.0. Wynwood and Thornton were at the head of affairs in the egrly stages from Island Linnet and Thornton. Across the top Honest Maid moved up from the rear, and into the straight the order was Wynwood, Island Linnet, Honest Maid, and Rowlands. Honest Maid finished best and beat Rowlands by a length. V Great Shot took up the running from Totolomoi, Tippling, and Red Boa. This Was the order to the straight, where Great Shot stayed on to beat Signaller by a length. Totolomai was a length and a-hnlf away, and then Night Maid, Time, Imin 46 4-ssec.
