DRIFT OF FINANCES
ECONOMY IN VICTORIA . s < The Victorian Minister of Railways, Mr Menzies, informed a deputation of Railway Union officials lately that, owing to a disconcerting drift in railway revenue and unexpected losses on land settlement, the State would probably have a much greater deficit than the £BOO,OOO allowed under the Premiers’ Plan, The raiiw'ay deficit would probably be £750,000 instead of the £445,000 mentioned in the Budget Estimates. Recovery had not come to the Railway Department, and rigid economy waa justified. • \ Members of the deputation stated that 40 men in the works branch had received notices of dismissal, and it was expected that about 40 more, men would soon be dismissed. They claimed that it was the duty of the Government to find work for those men, and not throw them into the ranks of the unemployed. Mr Menzies said he could not entertain a request for reconsidering notices of dismissal or impending notices served by the commissioners. The department was not in a position to do anything but cut down.
