For the first time in history a census has been taken in Egypt. It took the authorities, six months to get instructions issued in towns and villages. Hitherto it had not been possible to obtain details about marriage and divorce owing to the secrecy of the Moslems. The number of marriages last year was 21.8 per 1000 inhabitants, which is very high. The favourite marriage age for Moslem men is between 21 and 29, while more than one-third of the women were married under the age of 20. A- Moslem is allowed wives, according to the law of the Koran the Islamic bible —but bad trade has cut down the number. A Moslem marriage is so easy that it does not require the presence of the bride. The ceremony is held at the house of the bride’s parents. Only two witnesses are necessary, but there is usually a large gathering of men. The bride’s father takes the right hand of the bridegroom and says: “I give to thee my daughter for a dowry of 50 head of cattle,” or whatever it may be. The bridegroom accepts this contract and calls upon those present to bear witness. Divorce is equally simple. The words “ I divorce thee ” arc pronounced three times before witnesses and the marriage is ended!
