BALCLUTHA More men have been engaged at the Kaitangata mine_ owing to the demand for coal having increased. Before departing for Taumarunui, Sister Wilkinson, [oil Court Queen of the Molyneux, A.0.F., was entertained by members at a farewell function in the lodge '•oom, and was presented with a handsome leather bag as a token of esteem and appreciation from the lodge. District dairy factories have this week received an offer of 5d per lb, f.0.b., for air unsold cheese made until the end of the season in July. This, will not affect Paretai, from which the seasons output has already been sold. Wednesday night's " movie ball" in the Britannia Theatre, in aid of the Mayor's Relief Fund, drew an attendance of about' 300, the takings amounting to £45. Prizes for poster costumes were won by Mrs R: Buchanan, Mrs J. H. Stevenson, Misses Matheson, Edna Cameron, and Edwards. KUROW The president (the Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer) presided at the annual meeting of the Country Rugby Football Referees' Association. Mr J. Carmichael tendered his resignation as secretary. ' Considerable discussion took place regarding the lack of country referees, and it was decided that the association should, if possible, sink its identity as an association and suggest to the Waitaki Sub-union that the sub-union's secretary, together with one of the referees, should act as an appointment committee. The weekly shoots of the Kurow Minia., ture Rifle Club are being well attended, over 50 members. on an average going down to shoot. The annual meeting of the Lawrence branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held on Wednesday night in the Returned Soldiers' Association rooms. The president (Mr R. L. Anderson) was in the chair. The annual report showed that 42 ex-servicemen were on the roll together with 15 hon. members. Mr R. L. Anderson was re-elected president, Mr J. M'Keich was elected vice-president, and Mr F. L. M'Farlane secretary and treasured. The committee was re-elected with the addition of Messrs Cameron, Winter, Hellyer and Winchester. The final results of the Poppy Day appeal for the district was £57 19s 7d. A sale of work in aid of the funds of the Beaumont Presbyterian Church was held in the Coronation Hall on Saturday. The sale was opened by the Rev. H. H. Barton, of Lawrence, who congratulated the ladies on the excellent display of goods in the different stalls, and expressed the hope that they would experience a ready response from the public. WANAKA Wheat growers in the Upper- Clutha met Messrs Macpherson (chairman) and Grant, of the Wheat Board, at Luggate on Tuesday to discuss the price of.wheat to growers in this district. The president of the local branch of the Farmers' Union (Mr R. Wilson) was chairman, and, represented to the•, members of the board the inadequacy of the return to growers in the Upper Clutha Valley, jt was suggested that Luggate should be made a wheat •" port," but the members of the board pointed out that the freight would still be a charge against the flour gristed at Luggate and debited against the grower. The members of the board agreed to consider further the granting of some relief to the growers. % QUEENSTOWN The promise of better weather during the week was hardly fulfilled, for, though there have been some fine days, others have been very wet. : There has, however, been no suggestion of floods. Snow appeared on Monday on the ranges, since when the temperature has been lower. Up to the present there has been no frost, which i 8 remarkable for so advanced -a period of the year. As a rule, May is a very cold, month in this district, but a sunny one. The annual meeting of the Rovers Basketball Club was fairly well attended, Mrs W. Roycroft presiding. The balance sheet showed a credit of £4 10s 6d, which was regarded a s very satisfactory. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs Roycroft; • vicepresidents—Mesdames O. Stevenson, H. Braden, H. Sew Hoy, and H. Tomkies; secretary, Miss R. Wales; Social Committee —President, secretary, Misses V. Roycroft, M. Nelson, M. Blackham, D. Sew Hoy, F. Tallentire, and M. Newman; delegates to the association, the captain and Miss S. M'Kinnon. The two last-named were also appointed selectors. Subscriptions -were fixed at 2s for seniors and Is for juniors. At a recent meeting of the Wakatipu branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr A. M'Bride was re-elected president and Mr D. H. Cockburn vice-presi-dent. Other officers elected were:—Secretary and treasurer —Mr W. P. Saunders; auditor, Mr L. Lee; committee—Messrs R. Shaw, M. Jenkins, A. V. Miller, J. Grant, K. Brown, A. W. Scott, T. Kinross. W. M'Lean,' W. S. Reid, and John Reid. Mr D. H. Cockburn was reappointed representative on the Otago Provincial Council for the Wakatipu and Upper Clutha branches. A letter was received from the district engineer of the New Zealand Railways (Invercargill) advising that the improvements asked for in respect of the loading of stock at Kingston, as arranged between the traffic manager and the branch's delegates (Messrs P. Reid and G. Cockburn) would be. undertaken at an early date. Captain Beck, Captain Roe, and Sister Sudsbury, members of the English Church Army, which i s conducting a mission in New Zealand at the present tjme, arrived here on Monday evening.
