WINTER MEETING CONCLUDED

HAROLD LOGAN BEATS WALLA. WALLA

The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting was concluded yesterday. The principal attraction was the Flying Mile contest between Harold Logan and Walla Walla, but unfortunately a prang of the weather wrecked the greatest chance of success that has ever been possible in connection with a local lightharness meeting. If Walla Walla and Harold Logan could have entered the lists under sunshine and favourable' track and atmospheric conditions Forbury Park would have .proved too small to hold the crowd. Fortunately the weather kept fine until the champions appeared on the scene. At this stage the attendance was remarkably good, and at least supplied some indication of the crowd that would have turned out under more attractive conditions, and with a partial holiday to assist in building up the throng of those who love to see champions meet in contest on level terms. The match was generally regarded in a very fine sporting spirit, with financial interests almost entirely ignored. Harold Logan won, but the lOngstriding Walla Walla could not have been seen at his best on a track that did not supply the good foothold essential for a horse with such action. Harold Logan must not, however, be deprived of the kudos attached to the victory, because he hag always proved himself a real racehorse under any circumstances. The rest of the card provided some very interesting racing, although the final half of the card was got off under very disadvantageous circumstances. The financial results to the club wiR be*a, blow, but from a sporting point of view a great, success has been achievedA full card went out for the Tahuna Handicap*-with Sister Mary carrying £59 more . than Triangle. < The betting was fairly even between Journey’s End, Walter Wrack, and Billy Sundy, who were next in demand. J Sister Mary began well, and racing' out wide on' the middle ox the track, where the going was better than on the rails, led Mataunga on the rails. Kotin** had closed up after going where Journey’s End broke. Sister Mary, etill racing 'tfidc out, led Kotinga the stragiht and won well by nearly four lengths. Billy Sundy was well up a mile from home, but faded nut. Walter Wrack and; Triangle both broke during the race. " ;’' ■' ' , _'■ '■ .. Compass, Sadie Airworthy, and Summit were taken out of ' the Royal ■ Handicap. Dundee war elected a isolid favourite, but wrecked hi* chance by breaking , at the start'.and losing a lot of ground. The lost ground, was made up rather too quickly, and Dundee joined Lone Derby in tHe front with a lap to go, where Greenmantle’ was in close attendance, the / trio named drew out going along the back stretch,‘but-the favourite commenced to tire* Lone .Derby led into the straight, where'; Greenmantle game on and cut down the leaders. Grey Girl was taken out of the Pacific Handicap, and Black Jester became a late scratching, as he could not be found. It was. a very even betting race between Golden Direct, Nelson Pointer. Sure, and Prairie King, starting with only small margins ■ between them. , Margaret Chenault broke at the start, and,Nelson Pointer, Priceless, Sunbloom, Red Spur, Golden Direct; and Sure were the early leaders. Nelson Pointer; failed to stay on, and Priceless stalled off Sure and won by half a length. Golden Direct was stopping in the final quarter, • -' When WalU Walla and Harold Logan came into theTpirdcage there was a good crowd on the course. Both horses and their drivers were greeted with applause from the spectators as they paraded in the straight. A slight drizzle was falling as they warmed up,for the battle. Harold Logan drew the rails. They got away to an even .start, and went off very .fast. Harold. Logan was steadied, and Walla Walla took up the role of pacemaker, and was three' lengths in front when he 1 eached the half mile in Imin 3 3-ssce. Harold Logan moved up to Walla Walla in the back stretch, but appeared to be taking a feeler and was steadied at the far turn. Walla Walla was sailing along in front about two lengths in front of Harold Logan coming, round the top and still about the same lead as they turned for home. Harold Logan then quickly gathered up Walla Walla and was coming away from him when he went to a skip and before getting balanced again Walla Walla got almost on terms. Harold Logan .caught back-and came on to win by half a length in 2min 13 l-ssec. They appeared to be waiting in the second halfmile and when it came to speed Harold Logan had the better of it with the Australian. . Golden Dollar and Real Burton both broke at the start of the Railway Handicap, .in which they started first and third favourite. Agile led from end to end and won nicely at the finish. A heavy drizzle was falling when the James Memorial Handicap field went to the post. The field raced in close order throughout with Worthy Queen setting the pace until headed by Raydus inside the final half mile. The field raced in the middle of the track and going to the last half mile Aymont Chimes, toilowed by cut through on the inside. Ayrmont Chimes joined Worthy Queen in the lead but did not last long and Raydca had taken charge going to the far turn. Raydus came right away at the finish - and Ayrmont Chimes and Waress cut Worthy Queen out of a place. ’, Margaret Cheuault, Blue Mountain Queen, and Nelson Pointer were struck out of the Southland Handicap. Morello was a pronounced favourite but completely settled his chance by dwelling on the mark and getting away a bad last. Sunbloom and William Tell made the running but the latter put in n break. King Mac was always handy and, with the leaders tiring, he won from Gunraetal, Ma-garet Bell, and Raider. The scratching pen was freely used in connection with the Handicap Nimbus, Master Roy, Probationer, Raydus. and Silver de Oro all failed to keep their engagements. Peter Locanda. who was a well-backed chance, had everything in bis favour but failed. Chrnwood showed speed but caused trouble by breaking, and Rollo beat Grand Canyon at the finish. The result might have been - different if Chenwood had not broken and come back on Gunfire. He seemed to box the field racing at that stage behind Peter Locanda. In the unavoidable absence of Mr W Rudkin the position of judge was filled by Mr T. Fogg and Mr Harry Jarden acted as time-keeper in conjunction with Mr J. Kelleher owing to the indisposition of Mr F. J. Townsend. Mr W. F. Dunile again got the fields away ou satis-, factory terms and the management of the meeting was up to the high standard maintained for several season’s past. It may also be taken for granted that the very competent staff handling the investments maintained its reputation of being the: most efficient or at least second to none in New Zealand. , Tlic totalisator handled £14,444 10s for the day, as compared with £20,791 for the second day of the- winter meeting last vear (a Saturday). The total for the meeting was £26.261 10s. as against £35,089 for the winter meeting last year. Following are the results; — ?
