DUNEDIN STREETS
TO THE EIHTO3. Sib, —May I impose on your generosity in order to try if possible to bring under the notice of those responsible the shocking condition of many of the streets in Dunedin? Take Cargill road and Fqrbury road: their condition is not only disgraceful but most dangerous. Last week, when one car was .following another the mud and water splashes actually reached both footpaths, and it was most vexing to see the mess that was made of people’s clothes. I have just completed a run of some thousands of miles in both islands and have met nothing to compare with these two named roads. On many occasions I have seen cars skid in the deep potholes, and if there is a smash I reckon the corporation will be responsible. Just the other day I broke a spring through a bump in one of these holes. It seems to me very bad business on the part of the officers responsible for road maintenance to allow them to get into such a shocking state. I have always , believed that a stitch in time saves nine. Would that our officials could learn the truth of this! It beats me to understand how at least some of our councillors who live in the St. Clair district, to say nothing of the city engineer, can go over these roads and allow them to go to ruin. I am paying over £IOO in rates for property in the district and sometimes wonder what is done with our money.—l am, etc., St. Clair, May 0. Ratepayer.
