THE SEEING EYE

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —It was with peculiar pleasure that I noted your choice of Kothensteiu s “Tree in Winter” for reproduction in your columns. While the grace of swelling buds and bursting leaves in spring is very generally recognised, as also the maturer loveliness of summer leafage, and the charm of autumn tailings, the wonder of the leafless tree is sometimes altogether missed. Trees, it must be admitted, have individuality even as human beings have; and as we recognise the marvel of the human form divine, yet pass without a thrill hundreds of individual men and women in the street, struck into admiration only now and then by some exceptionally fine form, so in the lime of leaflessness we may pass tree after tree unthrilled, yet, if observant, will come now and then upon a marvel of tracery such as stirs us to the heart’s core and becomes a precious memory. I know many a tree about our city and its suburbs which in winter time presents a ravishingly lovely sight; and often I have wished that such might be transferred to canvas or to paper for the benefit of those who have not seen it. Rothenstein’s presentation may suggest to some the possibilities of a walk on one of those “ dull ” winter days whose grey skies make the very best of backgrounds for the free arabesques of trunk and branch and twig. Your reproduction will reach many who will not see the pitture, and will surely earn the gratitude of some of them.—l am, etc., Beauty-seeker.
