, BALCLUTHA Mr Edward Hamilton, of Invercargill,* who ia engaged on a walking tour of New Zealand, arrived in Balclutha on Tuesday and left for Milton yesterday morning Last night, in the Dalton Hall, the members of the Ladies’ Lodge (Princess Elizabeth, No. 24, 1.0.0. F.) entertained Miss Belle Copland, of Stony Creek, 'at a social, and presented her with a crystal vase on the occasion of her approaching marriage. < KUROW The Hydro Scottish Society’s autumn dance was a pronounced success, and drew one of • the largest gatherings seen here for some time. Mr C. J. Burns carried out the- duties of M.Q., excellent music being supplied by the Gaiety Orchestra. During the evening a Monte Carlo onestep was won by the senior chieftain and Mrs Geddes. The contractors (Messrs A. Smith and Sons) are making good progress with the erection of the Kurow Memorial Hall. The walls, which are composed of reinforced concrete, are almost' completed. A start will shortly be made on placing the roof trusses, of which there are seven in all, each weighing llewt. . ' At the annual meeting of the Kurow sub-branch of. the Plunket Society the president (Mrs T. A. Munro) presided over a good attendance and welcomed the committee from the Waitaki Hydro subbranch. The report and balance sheet for the year ended March 31 were adopted. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs A. Dunstan for her interest in the welfare of the_ Plunket property; to Mr Maude, for auditing, the accounts; to those members of the committee who voluntarily cleaned the rooms; and to the Waitaki Hydro Committee, whose successful efforts in' raising funds were much . appreciated. The committee also thanked the members and subscribers for their loyal support' during the year. . After afternoon tea had been served Mrs Payne, president of the Waitaki Hydro subbranchy gave an interesting address on the' child welfare system in Australia Mrs .Payne was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The annual of the Waikbuaitl Domain Board, was .held oh. Monday evening, Mr. Pi Heckler presiding. The annual, report showed that , the chief, work of the year had been tree-planting and .the erection of rabbit-proof fences. The proposed works included a continuation of tree-planting and the erection of bathing sheds. The chief source of -income was ahfiwn by the balance sheet to be rents and grazing rights (£194); and the s chief item of expenditure, material and wages (£126,). A petition was received, sighed by a number of tenants ahd others interested, requesting, the board to make provision for the escape-of drainage and flood water from ■ lands adjoining, the Domain, i Members of the board were very Sympathetic, but doubted if anything more was -possible at a reasonable cost than had, already been done. . It was decided to invite the executive ~of the Racing Club (an interested party) to discuss'the matter-on-the-ground. The first ; gathering of,the season of the " Youncr Peopled Own” was held on Tuesday evening, and took the form of a social'organised by the Presbyterian Bible class. Songs, indoor games, and community singing comprised the .programme, which was in the charge of Mr C. Heeinan, with Mias Summers as pianist. At the close "of the programme Mr W. Lee, leader of the Bible class, thanked the 'committtee . whose labours had attracted. such a very large audience on the very' successful function arranged. It is understood that' both Mr John Roy, sen., of Moonlight,' and 'Mr W. IV Cross, of Goodwood, are doing as well as may be expected after' recent serious operations. - ‘ ' , / Alexandra . ■The quarterly meeting of»the..Central Otago Presbytery was held in the'Jpbilee Hall (Alexandra), on Monday, the Rev. W. J. Bevis presiding, over a good attendance. The morning session was taken up with presbytery business, and in;.the afternoon a conference was held with, the officebearers of the various parishes. A request from the Arrowtown charge for increased financial assistance was forwarded to the Home Mission Committee’for favourable consideration... A report was received from. Middlemarch, which showed that the. parish had made excellent progress in* overcoming .very serious .difficulties and the congregation was congratulated by the presbytery on its splendid report and best wishes were offered for its> continued .success. In connection with the “History of Central Otago Presbytery,” which is being compiled by the Rev. Alexander Don, of Ophir, it was decided to appoint a committee of , laymen to assist Mr Don in. his- plans for the publication of the work.. ■ The. Bible-in-schools question was ■ discussed, and referred to a committee- to bring down a report for the next meeting of the presbytery. The Life and Work Committee wrote in reference to the continuance of the work of an evangelist. The presbytery decided that the office of evangelist should be abolished, and .the work of evangelisation done by the ministers .of each presbytery.' At the afternoon conference matters concerning the welfare of the parishes ■ were fully discussed. An address' given'by Dr Elmslie, of Pembroke, proved very helpful, and was greatly appreciated.
