RUGBY FOOTBALL

OFFENCES ON THE REID PLAYERS AND REFEREE DEALT WITH. (Per United Press Association.) WAIROA, May tt. The Wairoa Rugby Union, at its meeting last night, dealt with five players of one club, two seniors, one other p'ayer, two spectators, and a referee for offences on the field in various parts of the district on Saturday. It further had to consider the action of the referee in calling off a senior game at Mahia on account of the misbehaviour of the spectators, who were speaking Maori, and urged the home team to adopt unfair tactics. The referee’s knowledge of the Native tongue enabled him to realise what was being said, and as the members of the visiting side were all pakehas he stopped the game for their protection. The union dealt severely with all offenders, even the referee, who was stood down for two Saturdays for striking a spectator who had used insulting remarks.
