It was lately officially stated in Berlin that 183,000 marriages bad been brought about by the provision of financial aid to those too poor to marry without it. The special grant at first was £3O, but this has been reduced to £25 because of the great demand. The money is provided by those who refuse to marry, for there is a special tax on bachelors. There is also special relief for taxpayers jvith large families.
