BOXING

AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S VISIT APPEARANCES IN TWO CENTRES. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, May 7. The team of Australian amateur boxers which will visit the Dominion this year should give a much-needed fillip to the pastime in this country. A sub-commit-tee of the New Zealand Boxing Council has recommended that the Australia v. New Zealand match should be boxed at Invercargill on October 8 and 9, the Southland Boxing Association having agreed to the guarantee asked f<jr by the council. The New Zealand Boxing Council has suggested the following itinerary for the tour:— October 4.—Arrive at Wellington from Sydney by the Monowai. October 8 and 9.—Against New Zealand representatives at Invercargill. October 15.—Against Auckland at Auckland. .

October 28.—Leave Auckland for Sydney by the Marama. It is estimated that the tour will cost in the vicinity of £430. The New Zealand Council will be responsible for a party of 10 (eight boxers, a manager, and trainer), but there is a possibility of additional boxers making the trip. The team will be selected after the State championships in Australia, and it is probable that for the most part the same men who fought, against the New Zealimdcrs at Brisbane last year will be chosen. As the New Zealanders will have just completed the Dominion championships at Hastings they should be in their best form. 14 The Australian lads selected for the tour will be lucky, as they will be three weeks in the Dominion and will have to box on only four nights. A visit to Rotorua is among the possibilities of the tour. In any case the visitors will see something of the country as they will travel from Invercargill to Auckland. The secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Association (Mr G. P. Aldridge) stated to-day that the Australian team may yet travel by steamer from Melbourne to Bluff.
