UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
LOCAL ACTIVITIES WORK FOR TO-DAY. ) The members of Group No. 309 should report for work at the Mornington Football Ground at 8 a.m. to-day. NORTH DUNEDIN UNEMPLOYED. The North Dunedin Unemployed Workers’ Association held its weekly meeting last Tuesday evening. The chairman (Mr J. E. Hastie) presided over a large attendance, 10 new members being enrolled. Correspondence was received from the local Unemployment Committee, the Mayor, and N.U.W.M. It was decided to send a letter to the Minister of Employment protesting against the abolition of, ration orders and the proposed camp scheme. Two delegates were appointed to represent the association at the newly-formed District Council, namely, Messrs Hastie and Collins. A report was received from the deputation which waited on Mr Bromley, and a most encouraging report and balance sheet were received from the Social Committee. SUSTENANCE PAYMENTS. (Pee United Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 7. Support for the objection traised in Palmerston North to the payment of sustenance at rates lower than the payment the men would receive if relief work were available was given by the New Plymouth Borough Council to-night. The council made it plain, however, that it was opposed to the payment of the " dole ” if work could possibly be found.
