SIR LOUIS BARON CHAIRMAN OF CARRERAS. LONDON, May «. The death is announced of Sir Louis Baron, chairman of Carreras Ltd. Sir Louis Baron, first baronet, was born in 1876. He was the oldest son of the late Mr Bernard Baron, and was associated with the tobacco and cigarette manufacturing business of his father, ultimately succeeding him as managing director. MRS G. A. HERBERT (From Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, May 7.

The death took place at her residence, Queenstown, late on Thursday night, of Mrs G. A. Herbert, the wife of Captain George A. Herbert, officer in charge of the Lake Wakatipu steamer service. The deceased, who was only 34 years of age, was born in Christchurch. She was the elder daughter of the late Mr W. J. ,P. Boulton, who for many years was assistant manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company at Christchurch and later at Wellington. Prior to Captain Herbert’s appointment to Queenstown six years ago, their home was in Wellington, Captain Herbert being chief officer on the Tamahine. Mrs Herbert had been in rather delicate health for some time, and during the last 12 months or more her condition had occasioned her relatives much anxiety. Mrs Herbert was deeply interested in the Guide movement, and waa associated with the establishment of the Queenstown Company of Girl Guides, as secretary. She Avas a member of the Wakatipu Golf Club and of the Lake County Sub-branch of the Plunket Society. There are two children—a daughter and son—both of whom are quite young. Mrs Herbert is also survived by three brothers—Messrs Clive Boulton (Te Kuiti), Norman (Wellington), and Glen (Te Kuiti), and one sister. Miss Gwenith Boulton, of Wellington. MR DAVID REID (From our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, May 7. The oldest settler of the district in point of age, and possibly, also, in respect of residence, in the person of Mr David Reid, of Gibbstou, died on Friday at Moanapuru, Taieri Beach, where he Avcnt tAvo or three Aveeks ago to stay with his only daughter, Mrs Samuel Hunter. The deceased, who had reached the age of 93 years, Avas born at Stronsay, in the Orkney Islands. In 1861 he came out to the Victorian diggings, and later crossed over to New Zealand. Attracted by the report of the finding of gold at Gabriel’s Gully. From there he Avent to the Dunstan and then to Fox’s. He AA'orked for a considerable time at SAviper’s Gully, a tributary of the Arrow River. Subsequently he went to Gibbstou, where he bought a property. With this as his headquarters he still engaged in mining, his operations being mainly on the banks of the KaAvarau at Gibbston Flat. As time Avent on he turned his attention more seriously to farming, which he carried on with considerable success on his Gibbston property. In this connection it is Avorthy of note that Mr Reid was one of the first district settlers to apply a system of irrigation to his methods of farming. His two eons, Messrs James and William Reid, both of whom died some years ago, were associated with their father in the working of the property, and of late years grandsons, Messrs David J. and William Reid, have managed the farm. The deceased Avas very interested in afforestation, his Avell-planted property at Gibbston bearing evidence of this. He did not take any prominent part_ in public affairs. Mr Reid Avas a typical example in many Avays of the pioneers, having all the grit, hardihood and determination that characterised the men and Avomcn avlio laid the foundations of the province. The deceased is surviA'ed by his daughter, Mrs Samuel Hunter, of Moanapuru, and by three grandchildren —Mrs Knarston, of Green Island; and Messrs David and William Reid. Mr Reid’s Avife predeceased him 25 years ago.
