THE SOCIAL SERVICES. ANNUAL COST OVER £30,000,000. CANBERRA, May 7. (Received May 7, at 11 p.m.) The Commonwealth Statistician (Mr M’Phce), giving evidence before the commission which is inqniring / into the question of increasing the Commonwealtfi grants to Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania, said that the cost of social services in Australia was over £30,000,000, of which £11,000,000 represented old age and invalid pensions. TRADE AGREEMENTS. NEGOTIATIONS IN PROGRESS. MELBOURNE, May 7. (Received May 7, at 11 p.m.) Negotiations are being conducted with Canada, Belgium, and Italy for trade agreements with the Commonwealth, and the Minister of Commerce (Mr P. H. Stewart) is hopeful that these will be ready for presentation at the opening of the coming session of the Federal Parliament.
