VICTORIAN WOMEN’S GIFT BOOK

TO BE COMPILED FOR CENTENARY.

To arouse interest in the pioneer women of Victoria, the Women’s Centenary Council, as one of its schemes, has proposed that a centenary gift book shall be compiled to contain articles, stories, essays, poems, and illustrations, all describing some aspect of life in Victoria. It is intended that it should be w;ritten and illustrated entirely by Victorian women, whether at present there or in other States or countries. A series of articles would be devoted to relating the story of the first Victorian women in the various professions, in music and art, in politics, and in business enterprise. The schools, too, it is suggested, would have their place as well as the various women’s organisations. There would also be articles describing country life —the flourishing country towns, and sheep stations, and the “ way-back ’ that is to be found even in Victoria, and other articles of mountain scenery, caves, and the seaside. The suggested selling price is 2s 6d or 3s, with a limited edition at a guinea a copy, to be signed by a distinguished person. The Editorial Committee of the council will shortly issue invitations to many well-known Victorians to contribute stories or articles, but it has issued a general invitation to those who do not profess to write for publication to send material which may be put into literary form by experts, materials such as stories of early days or phases of Victorian life, or of the first women in various professions, etc., giving an interesting picture of women’s life or work in Victoria. All communications should be addressed to Miss Frances Fraser, 40 Banksia street, Heidelberg, N. 22, Victoria.
