SEEKING AGREEMENT

THE DISARMAMENT PROBLEM BRITAIN’S DRAMATIC BID. LONDON, December 14. (Received Dec. 14, at 9 p.m.) The News-Chronicle states that the Cabinet has approved of Sir John Simon touring the Continental capitals during the Christmas recess as part of the Government’s dramatic bid to secure a disarmament agreement. Among the, cities he will visit are Paris, Rome and Berlin, where he will see Herr Hitler and Baron von Neurath. The paper adds that the Cabinet hopes Sir John Simon will be able to effect a Franco-German rapprochement, at the same time learning more precise details of Signor Mussolini’s League reform plans. He will start his tour on December 21, going direct to Italy and afterwards to Paris. SUGGESTION IN PARLIAMENT. INTERNATIONAL POLICE FORCE. LONDON, December 14. (Received Dec. 14, at 9.30 p.m.) In the House of Commons Mr G. Mander (Lab.) moved in favour of the formation of rfti international police force controlled by the League. He suggested that an international force armed with all the weapons forbidden to Germany would be a threat to Versailles. Brigadier-general Spears (Con.) seconded the motion and expressed the opinion that this • was the only way of achieving security and disarmament Major C. R. Attlee, voicing Labour support, suggested that the example of the Empire policed by an Imperial force might be followed by the whole world. Captain Eden, replying, said the day might come when such a force would become ari\ actuality, but it was unlikely in the nedV future. The resolution was premature and impracticable and would only complicate the Government’s task of trying to obtain world agreement and reduce arms. Mr Mander withdrew his motion.
