MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE ; . ■: t :*■ ■ ' PROPOSED VISIT OF AUSTRALIANS. A meeting of the executive of,the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening. In the absence'of the president (Mr W. A. Jenkins) Mr E. H. James occupied the chair. There were also present Messrs R. Baker, T. W. Thomson, I. Turnbull, A. Findlay, W. H. Matthews, W. Williams, D. T. Woodfield, B. Kerr, J. Swann, 6. Field, and E» C. Isaac* (honorary secretary). It was decided that a letter be sent to Mr C. J. Leeden congratulating him on his very fine effort in saving the life of Mr Andrew Weir on Saturday -last at St. Kilda Beach.

With regard, to the contemplated tour of the Australian swimmers, Wilshire .and M’Cure, the Ashburton Centre wrote-stat-ing that it was in favour of the proposal. If the swimmers came to Ashburton the centre would like them to give a demonstration to the two large primary schools, there. —Received.—The Southland Centre advised that it was willing to accept two appearances provided that it could arrange them on Saturday and the following Monday at a charge of £ls, and also provided that it could arrange the payment of train fares from and to Dunedin, and lodgings while in Invercargill. The .Southland centre suggested that in the event of M‘Cure being unable to accept the invitation a diver be then invited,—Received. —The secretary reported that no. replies had yet reached him from Wellington or Canterbury. It was probable that the Timaru and Oamaru Centres would arrange for two appearances and one , appearance respectively.—lt was agreed that the executive await replies, and, if these were favourable, map out an itinerary. This would be submitted to the secretary of the New South Wale* Swimming Association and the New Zealand Council would* be asked to send the official invitation to the swimmers after receiving Mr D. He)mvich’s recommendations. —ft was thought that, since the swimmers would be in Dunedin a week, some effort should be made to arrange a demonstration for the school*. It was decided to advise the Port Chalmers Rowing Club that, if it were willing to hold the proposed swimming carnival in connection with the club’s jubilee during January, the centre would then draw up a programme and cooperate.—The matter was left in the hands of the secretary. ! The date for the Batt Cup Harbour Race was fixed for January 27, the course to be the same as last year. The secretary mentioned that the. entries for the Intermediate Championship* were the best that had been received for some years. Mr G. Field reported on the visit of the Zenith Club’s team to Oamaru. ■ The team had met with some success, and it* efforts had been, very much appreciated. The Oamaru Club was holding another carnival in February, and would be glad of assistance from,Dunedin. ' The programme. for the Zenith Club ■ carnival, to be held on January 25, ; was approved. 1 Speaking on behalf of the polo selectors (Messrs Woodfield and Kerr), Mr Woodfield stated that, before picking the Probables and Possibles for the New Zealand championships, they were desirou* of seeing the match between St. Clair and Kiwi A, on Saturday, and also a replay of the match Otago v. the Rest, which had taken place during the Labour Day week-end. He also drew attention to the difficulty experienced by referee* in matches whlre the teams did not wear the regulation caps. —The secretary. wa« authorised to procure a set of caps for the centre at the earliest date. The appointment of Mr D. T. .Woodfield as referee for the St. Clair v. Kiwi A polo match was confirmed. - : It was decided that a letter of con* gratulation be sent to Miss D. Symon, who had broken the New Zealand juni® girls’ 100 yards and 50 yards records if* cently at Invercargill. bv -
