FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

FORESTRY. The fortnightly meeting of Court St. Andrew’s was held on Monday last, when C. Bro. J. A. S. Gray presided over a full attendance of. officers and a large muster of members. The usual business relating to the sick members was dealt with, and sick allowances were passed for payment. Advice was received, from the medical officer of the court, Dr Murray, stating that he would be absent from Dunedin in" England during the next year, and that Dr Scarle would be acting in hie place., During the evening one new member was admitted by the\ G.R., assisted by P.C.R. Sis. M. Borland. The meeting closed early in order to entertain the members of the two juvenile branches'attached to / the court, Courts Advance and Progress, at games and competitions. An enjoyable evening was spent, prizes for a guessing competition being won by Sis. C. Wright and Bro. G. MTCay. Next court night, being the final meeting for the year, it was decided to celebrate it in a suitable manner. Court King Edward’s, Pride held its fortnightly meeting on Thursday last, when Sis. N. Roberts presided over a good attendance of members. Official visits were received from Courts Excelsior, Marion, Price of Dunedin, and Enterprise, all of whom were welcomed in the usual manner. Two candidates were admitted. The second round- of the card tournament was held, when Court Enterprise won the cribb'age and Court Excelsior and Court Pride of Dunedin won the euchre. The evening closed with a dance. On Saturday last the court held its annual Christmas treat for the children of members. There was a large attendance of adults, and 148 children were present. An official visit was paid during the afternoon by the D. Bro. R. S. Vercoe, who was accompanied by the D.S.C.R., Bro. H. E. Thomson; D. Sec., Bro. J. K. Macfie; and D.W., Bro. J. E. Olsen. The children were well looked after by the adult mem-

bers, and all spent a happy time, each being presented with a toy before leaving. On behalf of the district, the D.C.R. congratulated the court on its fine efforts to entertain the young, and referred to the work carried out so well by an energetic committee. DRUIDISM. Arch Druid Bro. Shepherd presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at the Otago Lodge. Correspondence included an invitation from the Royal Oak Chapter for December 12 and the acceptance for a cricket match with the St. Kilda Committee. _ The sick bards reported on rather long lists of members sick, regret being expressed with so much . sickness. D.P. Bro. Morris attended offi- ■ dally and invested all the elected officers with their respective chairs. The members of the Bay Lodge attended with a good contingent and after a spirited game of cribbage, were successful in carrying off the honours of the evening and received at the hands of Bro. Morris the much-coveted Cribbage Shield. Welcome visitors included D.P. Bro. Bezett and representatives of the Bay, Enterprise, West Harbour. All Nations, Ivanhoe, and the Royal Arch Chapter. The Rose of Palmerston Lodge, U. held its fortnightly meeting recently. A.D. Bro. Rankin presided over a good attendance. The usual routine of the lodge was carried out in a very creditable manner Two candidates were initiated, and another candidate was proposed. The following officers were elected, tor the current term,: — A.D.. Bro. H. E. Lowen: V. Bro.'J. Logie: treasurer, P.D.P. Bro. J. Hoodie; M.C., P.D.P. Bro, Earley; I. Bro. I. Burrows; 0.G., A. Frame; A.D.8., P.A. Bros. Hurndell and Ireland; V.A.8., Bros. Lowen and Aitehison; Grand Lodge representatives. P.A. Bro,. J. Logie and P.A. Bro. J. M’Elwee. The installation of officers will be held next lodge night. Among the regular attenders at the lodge meetings is P.G.P. Bro. Hopkins, who still takes a very keen interest' in all lodge business. D.P. Bro. W. Hopkins, jun., is also a regular attender. The quarterly meeting of Enterprise

, Lodge was held last Wednesday, when 50 odd members greeted Arch Druid Bro. W. Brown. D.P. Bro. E. H. Bezett attended in his official capacity, and occupied the chair for the first half of the evening. During the evening, one candidate was ad- ' mitted into the rites of Druidism, whilst one proposition was. handed in. _ The bards’ report disclosed that there is still a large amount of sicjoiess about, and sick pay amounting to £3O was passed, for payment. The election of officers then took place, and Bros. W. B. Ruston and H. R. Hunt "acted as scrutineers. The result of the ballots were as follows: — I. Arch Bro. William Brown; Arch Druid, Bro. E. Maybee; vice-arch, Bro. A. P. Macfarlane; treasurer, Bro. George Alexander; M.C., Bro. S. A. Workman; inner guard, Bro. W. Smaill; outer guard, Bro. D. Trainer;, arch Druid bards, Bros. A. T. Workman and J. M'Farlane; vicearch bards, Bros. J. J. Byrne and J. A. Shanks;pianist, Bro, A. Croy: Grand Lodge representatives, Bros A. T. Workman and R. S.. Webb; Grand Lodge subs., •Bros. J. S. Welch and S. A. Workman. The following brethren were nominated for the position of D.P.:—Bros. W. G. Heatley, E. Birt, and J. A. Metcalf. During the evening several remits for Grand Lodge were discussed, and it was decided to send them all forward to the grand; secretary for inclusion in Grand Lodge agenda paper. Olive Branch Juvenile Lodge, No. 1, was presided over by J.P.A. Bro. Bradshaw. There was a fair attendance of members. An invitation from Southern Oak to the break-up night was accepted and two representatives "were appointed. . The general efficiency judge's were welcomed,; and after a careful 'survey of the business carried out, they complimented the officers upon their performance and drew attention to some slight errors. A Vote of thanks was accorded them, and was replied to by P.D.P. Bro.' Pauls. The half-yearly meeting of Bay Lodge was held in, the Masonic Hall, St. Kilda,' Arch Druid Bro. H. A. Adams presiding over a large attendance of members. D.P. Bro. E. H. Bezett paid an official visit, and was received with musical, honours. Other welcome visitors were:—P.G.P.
