CHESS CONGRESS
SATISFACTORY ENTRIES A meeting of -the New Zealand Chess Congress Committee was held in the Otago Chess Club’s rooms in Stuart street on Wednesday evening. The president, Dr E. N. Herrington, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members of the committee. Correspondence was dealt with from the New Zealand Chess Association, which advised that at the closing date for entries to the congress (December 1) 14 names had been submitted as competitors. These included Messrs J. 13. Dunlop, R. Watt and D. Phil from the Otago Club. A Mr R. M’Dermid was appointed chief umpire with other members of the committee ex-officio. The following prizes were allotted:— EiVst prize, £2O; second, £10; third, £5; fohrth, £2; with a brilliancy and best recovery prizes to be arranged. Committees were set up to arrange far the entertainment and general arrangements of the congress matters. The honorary secretary reported that a good response had been made to the committee’s appeal for financial assistance towards the expenses of the congress, with the result that all anxiety in regard to this matter had now been removed. The secretary’s report was received with general satisfaction. It was decided that the congress president (Dr Herrington) should open the congress, and the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) welcome the visitors to the city*. The congress will be opened in Dunedin at the Manchester Unity Chambers, Stuart street, on December 26 and will continue for a week or more.
