THE ENGLAND-AUSTRALIA AIR RACE
TO THE EDITOR. t . Sib, —Under the above head, I read a letter from “ Would-be Contributor,” who evidently thinks- that, in this time of hardship' and financial stringency; the people of New Zealand have sufficient money to spare to finance the participation of a New Zealand plane in the England to Australia Air Race. I think it is too much to expect the average New Zealander to contribute, voluntarily or .through taxation, to an uncertain development which may or may not be bene, ficial to this country. We must not forget, indeed, we cannot, that new taxation per annum is about £l2 per head! Futhermore, when we consider the amount of distress, -poverty, and general ness of about, 60,000 of our people, do we want to advertise New Zealand, and show to the world our sad state of mismanagement? Of course there are some people', unfortunately always with us, who think it not ridiculous to advertise New Zealand before -we set our affairs in order. We must apparently bear with these people as we' cannot very well do anything else.—l am, etc., Look Befobe You Flt! Dunedin, December 14.
