ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL
“’“POND” UNDER FOUNDATIONS CONTROL OF AREA SUGGESTED. LONDON, December 12. The existence of a “ pond ” underneath the foundations of St. Paul’s Cathedral is disclosed in a report by Sir Alexander Gibb and Mr Ralph Freeman, who say that it is essential that the flow of subsoil water in future should not be appreciably varied, and recommend that a defined area in the neighbourhood of the cathedral be controlled with a view to avoiding excavations. , ~ ' , The total subsidence of the central part of the cathedral in 37 i years is stated to be 2.39 in. The investigators urge that three experts be appointed under an Act of Parliament to control the area which requires most rigorous, attention.
