(From Oub Own Correspondent.) ' CLYDE, August 21. ~ BOWLING'CLUB. 'A , The annual meeting of the Clyde Bowling Club, held last Thursdav, was presided over by the president (Mr P. Edmonds). The balnace sheet and report were both adopted, and pleasure was expressed at the improved financial situation following the recent Paddy's market. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. O'Connell; vicepresidents—Messrs E. W.. George, R. N. Paulin, and William Annan; delegates to centre, the president and Mr W. K. George; delegates to combined clubs, Messrs P. Edmonds and H. E. Stevens; sole selector and. Secretary, Mr J. L» Davidson. The opening date agreed upon was Saturday, October 21. The gold ■ button for. Championship Singles was presented to /Mr W. K. George,, who won this last season. CROQUET "CLUB. The retiring president (Mrs H. E. Stevens) presided over the annual meeting of the Clyde Croquet Club. Office-bearers were elected as follows: President, Mrs E. W. George; vice-presi-dents—Mesdames A. Aitken, C. J. Hanning, sen., and H. E. Stevens; captain, Mrs Davis; secretary, Mrs. E..C. Wood; delegates to the combined club, the captain and secretary. LAWN TENNIS CLUB. There was a good attendance for the annual meeting of the Lawn Tennis Club, Mr lan Wilson occupying the chair. The report made mention of a very successful season last year and a .promising one for the season just opening, as some new and younger players would, become members. The, balance .sheet and report were adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr W. M. Lopdell; vice-presi-dents—Messrs C. J. Davidson, K. Bryan, and I. Wilson; delegates to the combined club—the president and Messrs I. Wilson and K. Bryan; delegates to Vincent Subassociation, the president and Mr lan Wilson; secretary, Mrs.W. K. George. Some alterations were made in subscriptions charged to visitors*- The opening date was fixed for September 30. COMBINED SPORTS CLUB. The Combined Sports Club held its annual meeting last Thursday. Mr P. Edmonds was in the chair. The balance sheet, showing a credit, balance of over £22, was adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr J. O'Connell; vice-presi-dents, Mrs E. W. George and Mr W. M. Lopdell; Executive Committee —Messrs P. Edmonds, H. E. Stevens, I. Wilson, PL Bryan, and Mesdames Wood and Davis; secretary, Mr J. L. Davidson; auditor, Mr W. K. George. The meeting agreed that unemployed v should be allowed to join any club for half fee. New equipment was ordered to be procured by various clubs before the opening of the season. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The annual seven-a-side tournament conducted by the Vincent Rugby Football Sub-union was held here on Saturday in sunny weather. There was an entry list of 44 teams for the various items on the programme and under- the control of Mr R. G. Varcoe, of Cromwell. The "matches were carried off and decided to time. The results were as follow: Bantams—Alexandra A 1, Cromwell 2. Schools (under 13) —Becks .1, Cromwell' 2. Junior —Cromwell 1, Matakanui 2. B Grade—Oturehua 1, Clyde 2. The play was interesting, and several exciting contests were witnessed by a very large crowd of visitors. The gate takings amounted to over £45 on a reduced aamission fee, while a further £ll was taken at a dance held in the Town Hall the same evening. ■■• DROWNING FATALITY. r Out of respect for the memory of Messrs Hill and Gilbert, who lost their lives in the recent drowning fatality, the weekly session of the Miners' Social Club was cancelled. Arrangements are made for the transport of a winch to the site of the accident, and by this means to attempt to recover the steel framework of the "chair" which may be holding one ,of the unfortunate victims. The fall at this part of the river would be about 60ft. Eye-witnesses of the final stages.of the tragedy state that Nixon showed remarkable bravery and in retaining a hold of the steel wire and lin© of rope, that had been secured to worK the "chair" to jsave himself. > '
