CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, June 26. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, who was charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. • Kenneth Morrison appeared for sentence on a charge of theft of an overcoat, having previously been remanded to allow the probation officer to submit a report.—After perusing a report submitted by Mr Garbutt, the magistrate convicted the accused and admitted him to probation for a term of two years. LICENSING CASES. John Joseph Brennan, licensee of the Wharf Hotel, pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours. —Mr L. R. Simpson appeared for the defendant.—Senior Sergeant Mac Lean said that on the evening of June 20, about 10.30, Sergeant Isbister found coming from the hotel a man who had in his possession a bottle of wine which he said he had bought from the defendant. The defendant, when interviewed, admitted having sold the wine to the man.—Mr Simpson explained that the man who bought the wine was a sailor from a tanker, who was an old, customer, and the defendant had served him more as a favour than anything elise. —The magistrate said that the defendant had been candid, with the police, and fined him £2 and costs (10s). The man mentioned in the previous case, Kristen Leir, was convicted and discharged for being unlawfully after hours on licensed premises. William Frank Lionel George Brown was charged with being found unlawfully after hours on the licensed premises of another hotel, and was fined 20s aud costs (10s). RETURN OF INCOME NOT FURNISHED. . William Edward Morgan, who was represented by Mr A. N. Haggitt, pleaded guilty to failing to furnish a return of income for unemployment levy purposes. A fine of 20s and costs (10s) was imposed. MAINTENANCE. Albert Hardy pleaded guilty to disobedience of a maintenance order on which he was in arrear to the extent of £4 10s. —After hearing evidence by the defendant, the magistrate adjourned the case sine die, to allow him to produce further particulars of his circumstances. John Jackson was proceeded against by his wife on a claim for maintenance. Mr C. J. L. White appeared for the wife and Mr E. J. Anderson for the defendant. —After evidence by the parties had been hoard, the magistrate refused to make an order.
