GRAND OPERA CLUB

" U Trovatore," one of the most popular of all Italian operas, will be completely 6taged by a talented company of performers in His Majesty's Theatre, commencing on Wednesday, July 5, at 7.45 p.m., and for the following three nights. Mr Hubert Carter, the well-known Christchurch tenor, has been specially engaged to play the part of Manrico, and his fresh beautifully-produced voice and bis natural acting ability make him ideal in this part. The tenor has a number of most effective solos—not the least famous being the well-known "Miserere" scene with Leonora (Miss Gaynor Paape) and the chorus. Mies Paape has a delightful stage manner, and her soft, clear voice with its remarkable range make her quite at home in her character. Miss Phyllis Clave and Miss Jess M'Millan will both take the part of Azucena, and the two different interpretations to suit the two individualities arc of great interest. Miss Clare, with her ringing voice, makes a virile, angry gipsy, while Miss M Millan e full, rich voice and her intense emotion make her study passionate and pathetic. Mr Arthur M'Donald makes a striking Count Di Luna, his ijreat range of voice and strong personality filling his role with virility. The famous "In the Light of Her Sweet Glances" is his principal aolo Mr Alex. M'Dowell is the Captain of the Guard, and is well suited for that part; while Miss Dorothy Mac Kay, Miss Mary Belcher, Mr E. Paris, and Mr J B Watt have smaller parts. A fine gipsy! ballet from the Rena Covering School of Dancing (Miss M. Tuckwell, principal) and a chorus of 60 go to make this production something really outstanding. Mr Alfred Walmsley will conduct and produce,, ( and a splendid orchestra will assist.
