PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

Mr John Leech and hia choir, the Minnesingers, were responsible for the excellent programme presented to the Music Circle of the Otago Women's Club on Friday evening. Mrs R. T. Little presided, and in a happy manner introduced Mr Leech to the members. A half-hour, passed all too quickly in listening to MiLeech give his impressions of great artists fie had heard and met during his career, artists in dramatic art, in elocution, in opera, on the concert platform, and as public speakers. The following programme was then presented:— A chorus, "Revel of the Leaves(Veasie), and a part song, "When Evening is Twilight" (Hatton), sung by the Minnesingers: a baritone song, ''Onaway, Awake" (Cowen), sung by Mr William Ruff ell; a solo and chorus, "The Habanera," from "Carmen" (Bizet), sung by Miss Helen Roy as Carmen, and the Minnesingers; an operatic solo, " Far Greater in His Lowly State," from "Queen of Sheba" (Gounod), sung by Miss Anne White; a duet, "Where Flows the Mohawk River" from "Rip van Winkle" (Planquette), sung by Mrs Richard Hudson and Mr John T. Leech; and a sextet, "What Strange Power," from " Lucia de Lammermoor" (Donizetti), sung by the Minnesingers.. The accompanist was Miss Sybil Baker, F.T.C.L., At the close of the evening, Miss Yorston, on behalf of the whole circle, thanked Mr Leech and the choir for the delightful musical evening provided by them.

The Y.M.C.A. Hall was tastefully decorated for the annual ball of the Waitaki Hydro Returned Soldiers' Association, great credit for this being due to Mr G. Brown. There was a Targe attendance, well over 200 couples being present. Mr W. C. Grant (chairman) and Miss Grant led the grand march. Mr W. Anderson carried out the duties of M.C. 'and was assisted by Mr T. Parsons. The dance music was up to its usual high standard. Supper was dispensed by the following Ladies' Committee: —Mesdames J. Miller,. L. Stephenson, J C. Timpany, G. Brown, W. Gnbbern, C. Lewis, and M'Lauchlin, assisted by Mrs A. Butler. Proceedings were carried into the small hours at the conclusion of which the president thanked those present for the patronage. The function was brought to a close with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne " and the National Anthem.
