BRITISH PICTURES
CONTRACT FOR FULLER THEATRES During recent years a notable advance has been , made in the standard of quality and the technique of British film productions, which as a result of this improvement are now able to challenge comparison with the output of any other film studios in the world. This circumstance is in itself highly gratifying; but at a time like the present when the slogan of “ trade within the Empire ” is commanding so much attention the success of British film producers possesses a very definite practical value. And not only that. The vogue of the “ talkies ” is now so universal that the appearance on the screen of British artists, using the accents of our mother-tongue in plays of peculiarly British sentiment and tradition must of necessity exert a valuable influence in strengthening the bonds of Empire. Already these pictures are well and favourable known in the Dominion and with the progressive improvement that is being maintained their popularity should continue to increase. For these and other reasons much interest will attach to the announcement which it is possible to make this morning that Messrs John Fuller and Sons and Associates have secured a contract for British Dominion Films, among which are included a number of GainsboroughGaumont pictures. In terras of this contract a number of these pictures will shortly be shown at ' the St. James Theatres in Dunedin and Invercargill and also in the other centres of the Dominion.
A list of some of the. films which will be available for exhibition at the St James Theatre in the near future suggests that these will include some outstanding and typically English productions in an appropriate atmosphere and setting. An advance list includes the following:—“Tell Me To-night,” “Thark,” “ Rome Express,” “ Yes, Mr Brown ” (featuring Jack Buchanan), “After the 'Ball,” “Blarney Stone” (Tom Walls), “ The Lost Chord,” “ Summer Lightning,” “Little Damozel,” “Bitter Sweet,” and “ Sorrell and Son.”
