DOMAIN BOARD

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Ocean Beach Domain Board was held in the committee room, Town Hall Buildings, yesterday afternoon; present: Messrs John Wilson (chairman), F. Wilkinson, E. Longworth, W, A. Scott, J, L. MTndoe, J. B, Shacklock, and J. J. Marlow. The chairman welcomed the new members to the board —Messrs Scott, MTndoe, and Wilkinson. Mr Wilson was reappointed chairman, and Mr Shaddock hon. treasurer, EAST PARK. A deputation from the Otago Rugby Union, consisting of Messrs J. Mitchell and 8. G. Stychc, waited on the board respecting ’ the use of grounds at East Park. Mr Mitchell said that in 1926 the union paid £IOO to the board for improving the playing areas, the understanding being that the money would be allowed by the board as rental. The union considered that it should not pay rent until 1935. The chairman said it had cost some hundreds of pounds to form the grounds since that time. The areas had to be kept in order, and the time had come now when they peeded top-dressing. Mr Mitchell said there, was nothing in writing about the rent; it was a verbal agreement with the late Mr Hancock. Mr Styche hoped the board would allow the union to have the free use of the grounds till 1936, Alter the deputation had retired, the board decided to charge rental on the grounds from next year. MARINE PARADE.

The secretary of the Otago Expansion League wrote suggesting that the, board might utilise unemployed labour in constructing a roadway or drive on the seaward side of the sandhills from St. Kilda to Forbury. Ultimately a marine parade might extend the length of the beach. The chairman did not favour the proposal, saying that such a road would destroy the picturesqueness of the sandhills. ■ ■ Mr Longworth said he would oppose any suggestion to make a road along the sandhills, which formed a protection to the flat land. 1 Mr MTndoe also voiced his disapproval of the proposed road. It was decided to inform the league of the board’s opposition to the suggested road. ST. CLAIR BEACH. The hon. secretary of the St. Clair Improvement Association wrote bringing before the board the following matters affecting the control of the beach;—(l) Keeping the beach clean and tidy; (2) prohibiting ball games in front of the bathing pavilions, and wherever the bathing flags are placed; (3) prohibiting the use of wooden surf boards and canoes m the same vicinity, as bathers were liable to be injured; (4) prohibiting dogs in the vicinity of people on the beach. The chairman said that action had been taken and notice boards erected. The secretary (Mr R. Johnston), pointed out that members of the Life-saving Club were empowered to act as, inspectors of the beach in order to keep it glean. LIFE-SAVING CLUB. The hon. secretary of the St. Clair Life-saving Club wrote asking for the removal of some of the piles on, the beach in front of the bathing pavilion. They were dangerous, and last year the life-line became entangled in them on various occasions. They would greatly retard the efforts of members in the event of a rescue. Mr MTndoe said there were five piles that were particularly awkward; they fouled the life-line every time. , Mr Longworth expressed the view that the piles stopped the scour of the water and helped to build up the sand. It was decided to refer the letter to the engineer of the Public Works Department, asking if the Government would permit the piles to be removed. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was adopted, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Wilkinson. The balance sheet was also adopted. , , Mr MTndoe said, ns a new member, he wished to congratulate the chairman and the board on the encellent work it had done in the past. He had been fairly intimate with the work all along, and since Mr Wilson had been chairman the work had gone ahead by leaps and bounds. The residents of St. Clair appreciated the new ground that had been made available to the school children, also the tennis and other grounds. . . It was decided to pay a visit or inspection on Wednesday morning next to works in progress and to inspect plans and sites of works in contemplation.
