PORT CHALMERS NEWS

MAGISTRATE’S COURT At a sitting of the Port Chalmers Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., nine ratepayers were sued by the Waikouaiti County Council for arrears in rates. Judgment was given by consent or confession in five cases, while two were paid and two cases adjourned. Several other civil cases were also adjourned until the next sitting of the court. WATER MAIN SCOURED When the water main below the Port Chalmers reservoir was opened recently a large quantity of rust was dislodged. Pieces of the rust measured two inches in diameter and were three-quarters of an inch thick. The rust appeared to have been attached to the inside of the main. The removal of the material proved beneficial, as a clearer passage was left for the flow of water through the main. UNEMPLOYMENT ALLOCATIONS Yesterday morning the following letter was received by the Port Chalmers Unemployment Committee from the Commissioner of Unemployment in Wellington, in reply to the committee's request for an increase in the allocations for relief work in the district. “ I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 9 in connection with the allocation provided for expenditure under scheme 5 at Port Chalmers. I appreciate your expressions of opinion in this connection, and assure you that the difficulties confronting the unemployed are fully appreciated. The board is doing its utmost to combat the conditions arising out of unemployment and the funds available are being fully and equitably allocated throughout the Dominion, Port Chalmers being in receipt of the maximum quota possible. I may say the basis upon which the Port Chalmers allocation is assessed is the highest operating outside the four main centres, and no reduction in this basis has been made since November of last year. In the circumstances I regret that it is impossible to make any increased monetary grant to Port Chalmers at the present time;”
